Discover kayaking, walking trails and open water at Lough Ennell Lilliput Forest Park near Mullingar in County Westmeath.

Lough Ennell (Lilliput) Coillte Forest Park sits on the eastern shore of Lough Ennell, just a short drive south of Mullingar in County Westmeath. The park is one of the midlands' most rewarding spots for anyone who wants to combine gentle forest walking with genuine water sports activity, all in a single visit. The lake itself is one of the largest in the Irish midlands, and its relatively sheltered bays make it a popular choice for kayakers and open-water swimmers who want calm, readable conditions rather than the unpredictability of the Atlantic coast.

The walking trails through the Coillte-managed forest are well-marked and suit a wide range of fitness levels. Routes wind between mature broadleaf and conifer woodland before opening onto the lakeshore, giving walkers regular views across the water. The terrain is mostly flat to gently rolling, which makes the park accessible for families with children or anyone returning to regular exercise. Wear trail shoes or light hiking boots rather than runners, particularly after wet weather when the forest floor can become soft underfoot.

For water sports, the launch area near the Lilliput car park is the natural starting point. Kayaking and canoeing are the most common activities here, and the open expanse of Lough Ennell rewards paddlers who push out from the shore. Beginners will find the sheltered margins manageable, while more experienced paddlers can explore the lake's larger open stretches. If you do not own equipment, it is worth checking with activity providers based in or around Mullingar town, as guided sessions on the lake are available seasonally. Bring a buoyancy aid, a change of dry clothes, and a waterproof bag for any valuables.

Mullingar is the nearest town, lying roughly five kilometres to the north, and it has a full range of cafes, sports shops and supermarkets if you need to pick up supplies before heading to the park. The main road south from Mullingar brings you close to the Lilliput access point, and there is a car park on site. Public transport does not serve the park directly, so a car or bicycle is the practical choice for most visitors. Cyclists will find the road from Mullingar manageable and largely traffic-free on quieter stretches.

One local tip worth knowing: the western light over Lough Ennell in the late afternoon is genuinely spectacular from the shoreline clearings, and most day visitors have already left by then. If you time your walk or paddle to finish in the early evening, you are likely to have long sections of the trail and the water almost entirely to yourself. County Westmeath's midland landscape can surprise visitors who arrive expecting drama and find instead a quieter, more meditative kind of beauty that rewards those who slow down and stay a little longer.
