Step inside one of Ireland's most iconic distilleries in the heart of Dublin for a guided whiskey tasting experience you won't forget.
Jameson Distillery Bow St sits on Smithfield Square in the heart of Dublin city, on the site where John Jameson first began distilling in 1780. The building itself is a beautifully restored former distillery warehouse, and just walking through the doors gives you a real sense of the craft and history behind one of Ireland's most beloved exports. Whether you're a whiskey enthusiast or simply curious, this is one of those experiences that rewards everyone who turns up.
Getting there is straightforward from anywhere in the city. The distillery is a short walk from the Red Luas line — hop off at Smithfield stop and you're practically at the door. If you're driving in from outside County Dublin, paid parking is available at the Smithfield Plaza car park nearby, though the Luas is genuinely the easier option. Buses from O'Connell Street also serve the area well, so there's no need to fuss with a car.
The distillery runs tours throughout the day, generally from mid-morning until early evening, with last tours departing a couple of hours before closing. It's always worth booking your slot online in advance, especially at weekends or during busier periods — walk-ups are possible but slots do fill. The standard tour takes roughly an hour and includes a guided tasting of three whiskeys, where you compare Jameson against a Scotch and an American bourbon to understand what makes Irish whiskey distinct.
Expect to pay around €26–€28 for the standard Distillery Tour, which covers the guided experience and your tasting. If you want to go deeper, the Whiskey Makers Tour (roughly €38) includes a more hands-on tasting led by a brand ambassador and a personalised blending element — worth it if whiskey is genuinely your thing. Both experiences are suitable for beginners; you don't need any prior knowledge to enjoy yourself thoroughly.
What to bring: comfortable shoes for walking the distillery floor, a valid ID if you look under 25, and an appetite — there's a good bar and restaurant on-site called The Grain & Grape where you can settle in after your tour. The gift shop stocks an impressive range of limited and exclusive bottlings you won't easily find elsewhere, so leave a little room in your bag if you're tempted.
Local tip: most visitors head straight for the main tour, but if you ask at the desk about Bow St Experience upgrades, you can sometimes access a quieter tasting room experience with more time for questions — ideal if you're visiting mid-week when footfall is lighter. Smithfield Square itself has a lovely cluster of independent coffee shops and the Old Jameson Distillery chimney is a great photo spot before you even go inside.
