What does an Aviation Ground Systems Engineer do?

As an Aviation Ground Systems Engineer, you are responsible for maintaining and developing the ground support infrastructure and equipment that keeps an airport running safely and efficiently. Your work covers a broad range of systems, including visual aids such as runway lighting, airport electrical systems, baggage handling, security systems, pavements, drainage, and the vehicles and equipment used across the airfield. You work closely with airport operations teams, contractors, air traffic control, and regulatory bodies to ensure that all ground systems meet strict aviation safety standards. On any given day you might be inspecting a lighting fault on a taxiway, testing a baggage conveyor system, or analysing performance data from navigation equipment, so no two days are quite the same.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an Aviation Ground Systems Engineer

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 05:45. You are based at a regional Irish airport and your shift starts at 07:00, so you leave home early enough to clear security, collect your airside pass and sign in at the engineering office before the morning operations briefing at 07:15. The duty operations manager runs through overnight incidents, weather conditions and any planned works on the airfield. There is a note about a reported fault on a taxiway edge light near Stand 4, so that goes straight to the top of your list. By 07:40 you are out on the airfield in a high-visibility vest and steel-toe boots, driving a marked airside vehicle. You radio the air traffic control tower to confirm your presence in the taxiway area, as required under the airport's movement area procedures. Using a handheld tester, you isolate the faulty light on the series circuit, identify a failed lamp insert and swap it out from your stock kit. You log the fault and the corrective action on the airport's computerised maintenance management system, known as CMMS, back at base.

Required Education

A Leaving Certificate with strong grades in Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering or Construction Studies provides a solid foundation for this career. The typical entry route is an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline, available at institutions such as TU Dublin, UCD, University of Galway, UCC, ATU, and MTU. Some engineers enter via an NFQ Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree and progress through further study or workplace experience. Postgraduate qualifications at NFQ Level 9, such as a Masters in Airport Engineering or Systems Engineering, can be an advantage for specialist roles. Membership of Engineers Ireland, while not a statutory requirement, is widely valued by employers such as daa and Shannon Airport Authority. Continued professional development and training on aviation-specific systems, such as GNSS performance and computer-aided engineering tools, is expected throughout your career.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most engineers begin in a junior or graduate engineer role at a major Irish airport such as Dublin or Shannon, or with an MRO provider, gaining hands-on experience across multiple ground systems. After several years, progression to a Senior Ground Systems Engineer or Systems Lead position brings greater responsibility for project delivery and team oversight. With further experience and possibly a Level 9 qualification, roles in engineering management or airport operations management become available. Some engineers move into consultancy, working on airport infrastructure projects across Europe and beyond.

AI Impact on the job

AI-driven predictive maintenance tools are beginning to reshape how ground systems engineers monitor and service airport infrastructure, reducing unexpected equipment failures by analysing real-time performance data. Automated diagnostic software can flag potential faults in baggage handling and lighting systems before they become operational problems, freeing engineers to focus on complex analysis and decision-making. However, the physical inspection, regulatory sign-off, and hands-on repair of safety-critical systems still require qualified human engineers, so AI is more likely to augment the role than replace it. Engineers who develop skills in data analytics and AI-assisted maintenance platforms will be better positioned as these technologies become standard across Irish airports.
