What does a Boilermaker do?

As a Boilermaker you fabricate, assemble, and maintain boilers, pressure vessels, and heavy structural metalwork used in industrial plants, energy facilities, and marine settings. Your daily work involves reading engineering blueprints, cutting and shaping metal sheets and tubes using oxy-acetylene torches and precision tools, and joining components through shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, or gas tungsten arc welding techniques. You inspect finished vessels for leaks, structural integrity, and compliance with safety standards, and carry out repair and retubing work on existing boilers. You typically work alongside mechanical engineers, other tradespeople, and site supervisors in manufacturing plants, power stations, refineries, or shipyards across Ireland.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Boilermaker

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 6.00 a.m. You are working at an industrial plant outside Drogheda, fabricating a replacement pressure vessel for a chemical processing facility. After signing in at the site office and completing your toolbox talk with the site supervisor at 7.30 a.m., you collect your personal protective equipment — flame-resistant overalls, welding helmet, steel-toe boots, and gloves — and head to the fabrication workshop. By 8.00 a.m. you are at the drawing board, quite literally. You spread out the engineering blueprints for the vessel shell and study the dimensional tolerances and weld specifications. You mark up your steel plate using a steel rule and scribe, then use a plasma cutter to cut the sections to the exact measurements called for on the drawing. Getting this right matters — even a millimetre out can cause problems during the pressure testing later.

Required Education

A SOLAS-registered apprenticeship in Metal Fabrication (NFQ Level 6) is the most direct route into this trade in Ireland, combining on-the-job training with off-the-job phases at a designated Education and Training Board (ETB) or Institute of Technology. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Engineering, Construction Studies, Physics, and Mathematics are useful preparation and demonstrate relevant technical aptitude. Some candidates first complete a QQI Level 5 certificate in Engineering or Fabrication and Welding at a PLC college to build foundational skills before entering an apprenticeship. Boilermakers working on pressure vessels must be familiar with Irish and EU pressure equipment regulations and may pursue additional certification in specific welding standards such as EN ISO 9606. Employers and clients in the energy and industrial sectors often require certified welding qualifications, which can be obtained through bodies such as the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) or internationally recognised awarding bodies. Experienced boilermakers may progress to supervisory or inspection roles with further CPD or engineering qualifications at NFQ Level 7 or above.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Boilermakers in Ireland begin their careers through the SOLAS Metal Fabrication apprenticeship, gaining experience across fabrication, welding, and on-site installation work. After qualifying, you typically build expertise in a specific sector such as pharmaceutical manufacturing, energy generation, or marine engineering, which are all significant employers in Ireland. With experience, you can progress to lead hand or supervisory roles, or move into inspection and quality assurance positions, particularly with additional welding or non-destructive testing (NDT) certifications. Some experienced boilermakers advance further into project management, estimating, or technical sales roles within engineering and fabrication companies.

AI Impact on the job

AI and digital tools are beginning to assist Boilermakers through automated welding systems, computer-aided design (CAD) software for blueprint generation, and AI-driven quality inspection using imaging technology to detect weld defects. These technologies are improving consistency and speed in high-volume fabrication settings, but the hands-on fabrication, site repair, and bespoke vessel work that makes up much of the Irish boilermaker's role requires human skill and judgement that automation cannot easily replicate. You will increasingly be expected to work alongside semi-automated welding equipment and use digital inspection tools rather than relying solely on manual methods. Adapting to these technologies through ongoing training will be important for career development, though the core trade skills are expected to remain central to the role for the foreseeable future.
