Sales & Marketing
As a Business Development Representative (BDR) you are typically the first point of contact between a technology company and its potential business customers, responsible for identifying and reaching out to prospects through cold calls, emails, and social-media outreach. You research target companies, qualify leads, and book discovery meetings for senior sales colleagues such as Account Executives. Much of your day is spent working within CRM platforms, tracking your outreach activity, logging notes, and meeting daily and weekly pipeline targets. You collaborate closely with marketing teams, who supply campaigns and inbound leads, and with sales managers who coach you on technique and strategy. BDR roles are particularly common in Dublin's large SaaS and technology sector, where many international companies operate multilingual sales hubs.
Listen: a day as a Business Development Representative
You arrive at the office in Dublin's city centre or log on from home just before eight-thirty. Before the rest of the team is fully online, you spend the first twenty minutes reviewing your CRM platform — most likely Salesforce or HubSpot — to check which prospects opened your emails yesterday and to organise your call list for the day. Your manager has set a daily target of around forty outreach activities, a mix of calls and personalised emails, so planning the morning early matters. At nine o'clock your team has a short stand-up call with the sales manager. You share your numbers from the previous day, mention any promising leads, and flag anything blocking your progress. The tone is direct and honest — if you missed your target yesterday, you say so and agree a plan to recover.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
A Leaving Certificate is the typical minimum academic entry point, and subjects such as Business, Economics, and English at Higher Level are genuinely useful for this role. Many employers in Ireland's tech sector value a Level 7 or Level 8 degree in Business, Marketing, or Communications, though a relevant QQI Level 6 award from a PLC course in Sales, Marketing, or Business can also open doors. Technological universities such as TU Dublin and ATU offer Higher Certificates and ordinary bachelor degrees in Sales and Marketing that are well regarded by Dublin tech employers. Some candidates enter directly from school or college and complete short in-house sales training programmes or industry certifications such as those offered by HubSpot Academy or Salesforce. There is no statutory professional registration body for this role, but progression into more senior sales positions is often supported by continuous professional development and recognised sales qualifications.
Most BDRs in Ireland begin in an entry-level outbound role and, after twelve to twenty-four months of strong performance, progress to an Account Executive position where they manage the full sales cycle and close deals. From there, experienced sales professionals can move into Senior Account Executive, Sales Manager, or Account Management roles, taking on larger territories or key client relationships. With further experience, progression into Sales Director or VP of Sales positions is achievable, particularly within Ireland's thriving SaaS sector. Some BDRs pivot into related areas such as marketing, customer success, or partnerships, making the role a versatile launch pad for a career in the technology industry.
AI tools are already transforming the BDR role by automating time-consuming tasks such as prospect list building, email personalisation at scale, and initial outreach sequencing, meaning you must learn to use these tools effectively to remain competitive. CRM platforms increasingly incorporate AI-driven lead scoring, which helps you prioritise the prospects most likely to convert and spend your time more efficiently. However, the human elements of the role — building rapport quickly, handling objections in live conversation, and adapting to unpredictable responses — remain difficult to automate and continue to define high-performing BDRs. The expectation is therefore shifting: you are expected to manage and interpret AI-assisted workflows rather than perform purely manual outreach tasks, raising the bar for digital literacy in the role.
