What does a Casino Cashier do?

As a Casino Cashier you handle all cash and chip transactions at the cashier cage within a licensed casino, exchanging currency for gaming chips and redeeming chips back into cash for customers. You count and audit the cash register at the start and end of each shift, maintaining accurate records of every transaction throughout the night. You are responsible for verifying customers' identification, obtaining signatures for significant pay-outs, and applying anti-money laundering procedures in line with Irish gaming regulations. You work closely with floor supervisors, security staff, and gaming inspectors, and you interact with a wide variety of customers in what can be a fast-paced, late-night environment.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Casino Cashier

0:00 / 0:00

Your shift starts at 6 p.m. You arrive at the casino's staff entrance, sign in, and head to the cashier cage to collect your float from the outgoing cashier. Together you count every note and coin carefully, cross-checking the total against the official float sheet before both of you sign it. If there is even a one-euro discrepancy, you find it before the other cashier leaves. This count can take twenty minutes and there is no rushing it. By 6.30 p.m. the casino floor is opening to members and the first customers approach the cage. Most want to exchange euro notes for gaming chips. You take each note, fan it under the UV light to check for counterfeits, count the amount aloud, and issue the equivalent value in chips, recording every transaction in the cage management system on your terminal.

Required Education

There is no formal third-level qualification required to work as a Casino Cashier in Ireland; most employers look for a good standard of numeracy and literacy, typically demonstrated through Junior Cycle or Leaving Certificate results. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Mathematics and Accounting are helpful in showing the numerical accuracy the role demands. All staff in licensed Irish casinos must pass Garda vetting before taking up employment, and employers provide in-house training covering casino procedures, cash-handling systems, and anti-money laundering obligations under Irish law. A QQI Level 5 certificate in Retail, Business Administration, or Accounting is an advantage and may be completed through a PLC course at a College of Further Education. Some larger casino operators offer structured on-the-job training programmes that bring new cashiers up to speed with internal compliance and customer-service standards. Relevant customer service or cash-handling experience from retail or hospitality is frequently valued as highly as formal qualifications.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Casino Cashiers begin on the floor as general cage cashiers, gaining experience across different shift patterns and transaction types before progressing to a senior or head cashier role with supervisory responsibility. From there, movement into casino income auditing or cage management is a natural next step, involving oversight of multiple cashiers and responsibility for end-of-day reconciliations. Some experienced cashiers move into broader casino operations or compliance roles, particularly as Irish-licensed venues place increasing emphasis on responsible gambling and regulatory adherence. Progression may also lead into financial or administrative positions within the hospitality sector more broadly.

AI Impact on the job

Automated cash-handling machines and self-service kiosks are increasingly used in gaming venues internationally, which can reduce the volume of routine chip-exchange transactions handled by human cashiers. However, the requirement for human judgment in identity verification, suspicious-transaction reporting, and customer complaint handling means the role is unlikely to be fully automated in the near term. AI-assisted compliance tools are beginning to flag unusual transaction patterns, which supports rather than replaces the cashier's oversight function. Overall, the role is evolving toward greater emphasis on compliance awareness and customer interaction rather than purely mechanical cash counting.
