What does a Clinical Research Associate do?

As a Clinical Research Associate (CRA) you monitor clinical trials on behalf of pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, or contract research organisations (CROs), ensuring that studies are conducted in accordance with the approved protocol, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, and relevant regulatory requirements. Your working week typically involves visiting hospital sites, GP practices, and research centres across Ireland to verify that patient data are being recorded accurately, that participants are safe, and that the trial team is following agreed procedures. You liaise closely with principal investigators, clinical trial nurses, data managers, and the sponsor's medical and regulatory teams to resolve any issues that arise during the trial. You produce detailed monitoring visit reports, track outstanding queries, and escalate serious protocol deviations or safety concerns to senior colleagues without delay. The role combines a strong scientific background with excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, as you are often the primary point of contact between the clinical site and the sponsoring company.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Clinical Research Associate

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 06:45. Today you have a monitoring visit at a teaching hospital in Cork — one of twelve active sites on a Phase III cardiovascular trial you are managing for a contract research organisation based in Dublin. You pack your monitoring bag with your laptop, the trial's protocol binder, source data verification checklists, and your sponsor-issued access card for the electronic data capture system, Medidata Rave. You catch the 07:30 train from Heuston, reviewing your visit agenda and any outstanding queries flagged since your last visit six weeks ago. You arrive at the hospital's Clinical Research Unit just before ten o'clock, sign in at reception and meet the clinical trial nurse who manages day-to-day activity on site. Over coffee you run through the visit agenda together. You need to review five newly enrolled participants, check that informed consent forms were signed before any trial procedures began, and verify that the pharmacy log tallies with the drug accountability records — a process known as source data verification, where you compare what is written in the patient's medical notes against what the site team entered into the electronic system.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.

Required Education

Most CRAs in Ireland hold at least an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in a life-science discipline such as pharmacy, biochemistry, nursing, physiology, or a related biomedical science. Relevant degrees are offered at universities including UCD, UCC, University of Galway, TCD, DCU, and UL, as well as the technological universities. Leaving Certificate subjects that provide a strong foundation include Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics, typically studied at Higher Level to support competitive CAO entry to science programmes. Some entrants hold an NFQ Level 9 postgraduate qualification in clinical research, regulatory affairs, or a related area, and short professional courses in Good Clinical Practice (GCP), offered by bodies such as the Irish Clinical Oncology Research Group (ICORG) and various private providers, are considered essential by most employers. There is no single statutory regulator for CRAs in Ireland, but professional membership of bodies such as the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) or the Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA) is valued. Nurses registered with NMBI who transition into clinical research find their clinical background particularly advantageous.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most CRAs begin as entry-level or junior CRAs within a CRO or pharmaceutical company, typically after gaining some laboratory, nursing, or clinical research coordination experience. With two to four years of monitoring experience across several therapeutic areas, you can progress to Senior CRA or Lead CRA, taking responsibility for more complex multinational studies and mentoring junior colleagues. Further advancement leads to roles such as Clinical Trial Manager, Project Manager, or Clinical Operations Manager, where you oversee entire study portfolios and manage cross-functional teams. With continued experience and possibly an NFQ Level 9 postgraduate qualification in regulatory affairs or clinical research management, senior leadership positions such as Head of Clinical Operations or Director of Clinical Affairs become achievable within Ireland's thriving pharma and MedTech sector.

AI Impact on the job

AI-driven risk-based monitoring (RBM) platforms are already changing how CRAs prioritise their site visits, using data analytics to flag sites or records that require immediate attention rather than applying a one-size-fits-all monitoring schedule. Automated data review tools can identify query patterns in electronic data capture systems faster than manual review, allowing you to focus your expertise on more complex investigative and relationship-management tasks during site visits. Remote and centralised monitoring, accelerated by AI tooling and lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, means a greater proportion of data review now happens off-site, though regulatory requirements and the need to verify source documents keep a meaningful on-site monitoring role intact. Overall, AI is reshaping rather than replacing the CRA role, with the most in-demand professionals being those who can interpret AI-generated risk signals, apply sound clinical judgement, and maintain strong communication with site teams.
