What will you learn?

Studying Biomedical Science at degree level gives you a thorough grounding in the science underpinning human health and disease. You will cover areas such as clinical biochemistry, haematology, medical microbiology, histopathology, and immunology, learning how laboratory analysis supports the diagnosis and treatment of illness. A significant part of your programme is spent in university laboratories developing practical skills in techniques like microscopy, molecular diagnostics, and blood analysis. Most programmes, particularly the UCC–MTU joint degree, include a structured placement in a hospital or clinical laboratory, giving you real-world experience working alongside Medical Scientists. A typical week balances lectures, laboratory practicals, and tutorial sessions, with placement periods adding a clinical dimension that is central to your professional development.

Required Education

Entry is typically through the CAO, and competition for places is moderate to high, reflecting strong demand for the profession. You will generally need a minimum of six subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including at least two Higher-level subjects, with Higher-level Biology and Chemistry being particularly advantageous; some programmes specify minimum grades in these sciences. Higher-level Mathematics is not always mandatory but is beneficial and may strengthen your application. QQI Level 5 or 6 awards in Science or Laboratory Skills from a PLC college can provide a progression route onto certain programmes, particularly at MTU or TU Dublin, for applicants who do not meet direct CAO entry requirements. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over by 1 January of entry) may apply through the CAO mature student category and are assessed on relevant experience and motivation. HEAR and DARE access schemes are available at participating institutions for eligible applicants.

Career Prospects

The outlook for Biomedical Science graduates in Ireland is strong, driven by sustained investment in the health service, an ageing population, and Ireland's position as a global hub for pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing. CORU registration as a Medical Scientist is a recognised professional credential that provides a clear pathway into secure, salaried public-sector employment within the HSE pay scales. Starting salaries for newly registered Medical Scientists in the HSE typically fall in the region of €36,000–€42,000 gross per annum, rising considerably with experience and senior grade progression. Demand for qualified Medical Scientists consistently outpaces the number of graduates qualifying each year, meaning employment prospects upon graduation are generally very positive.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being applied in diagnostic pathology, with machine-learning tools assisting in the analysis of histological slides, medical imaging, and the interpretation of large genomic datasets. As a Biomedical Science graduate, you will need to understand how these tools work, evaluate their outputs critically, and ensure quality assurance standards are maintained in an AI-assisted laboratory environment. Rather than replacing Medical Scientists, AI is expected to handle routine or high-volume analytical tasks, allowing professionals to focus on complex case interpretation, quality control, and patient-facing aspects of laboratory medicine. Familiarity with digital pathology platforms and data literacy will become increasingly important competencies throughout your career.
