What will you learn?

Applied Social Care at honours degree level prepares you to work directly with vulnerable individuals and communities across a wide range of settings, including residential care, disability services, addiction support, and family resource centres. You study human development, social policy, psychology, and law as they apply to social care practice in Ireland. A defining feature of the course is its strong emphasis on supervised professional placement, where you spend significant time each year working in real services alongside qualified practitioners. Modules are typically delivered through a mix of lectures, tutorials, reflective practice seminars, and case-based learning. By graduation, you will have developed both the theoretical grounding and the practical competence required for registration as a Social Care Worker with CORU, the statutory regulator for health and social care professionals in Ireland.

Required Education

Entry is typically through the CAO, requiring a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects including English and Maths at Ordinary level or above; points requirements are generally moderate, though this varies by institution and year. Subjects such as Biology, Psychology (where offered), CSPE, and Home Economics are useful preparation, though not always mandatory. Applicants who have completed a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC award in areas such as Community and Health Services, Childcare, or Social Studies may apply through a dedicated further education and training (FET) progression route, often with reduced or alternative entry requirements. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply as mature students and are assessed on the basis of relevant life or work experience. HEAR and DARE schemes are available at most institutions for students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities. Some institutions may require an interview or personal statement as part of the selection process.

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified social care workers in Ireland is strong and has grown consistently in recent years, driven by an ageing population, increased awareness of mental health needs, and expanding disability services under the UNCRPD framework. CORU registration provides a clear professional pathway and gives graduates a recognised credential that is valued by employers across the country. Graduate employment rates in this field are generally high, with many students securing positions in placement organisations before completing their studies. Salaries for newly qualified Social Care Workers in HSE-funded services typically range from approximately €32,000 to €40,000 gross per annum, with progression opportunities into senior and management roles over time.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are beginning to support administrative tasks in social care settings, such as case note documentation, rostering, and data management, which may reduce paperwork burdens for frontline workers. However, the deeply relational and ethical nature of direct social care practice means that human judgement, empathy, and presence remain absolutely central to the role and cannot be replicated by technology. Students on this course are increasingly expected to develop digital literacy skills and to think critically about how technology is used in care settings, including issues around privacy and safeguarding. Overall, AI is unlikely to displace social care workers but may reshape how they manage information and access supports for service users.
