As a Chaplain you provide pastoral, spiritual, and emotional support to individuals in secular institutions such as hospitals, prisons, schools, universities, and the Defence Forces. Your day-to-day work involves visiting people who are unwell, distressed, or isolated, offering a listening ear and, where appropriate, facilitating prayer, religious ceremonies, or multi-faith services. You work alongside doctors, nurses, social workers, prison officers, and teachers to ensure the holistic wellbeing of those in your care, referring people to other professional services when needed. Chaplains in Ireland operate across denominational and multi-faith settings, meaning you may support people of many different religious backgrounds as well as those with no faith.
Listen: a day as a Chaplain
You arrive at the secondary school just before eight-thirty, signing in at the main office and checking your diary for the day. A teacher has already left a note asking you to call in on a Transition Year student who has been quiet and withdrawn since returning after a family bereavement. You make a mental note to find a suitable moment, knowing you cannot simply pull a young person out of class without their agreement. By nine o'clock you are doing a quiet walk of the corridors, stopping for brief chats with students heading to first class. This informal visibility is a deliberate part of your role — many students who eventually seek you out first encounter you in exactly this way, in a corridor or at the canteen door, not in your small office.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
A relevant degree at NFQ Level 7 or 8 is the typical entry point; common disciplines include theology, divinity, pastoral care, social care, or applied social studies, available at institutions such as Maynooth University, MIC Limerick, and Marino Institute of Education. Many chaplains hold a postgraduate qualification in pastoral theology, healthcare chaplaincy, or counselling at NFQ Level 9. Leaving Certificate subjects that provide a useful foundation include Religious Education, English, History, and any social science subjects available in your school. Some denominational bodies require candidates to hold formal endorsement or commissioning from their own faith community before taking up a chaplaincy post. Healthcare chaplaincy in Ireland is increasingly professionalised, with practitioners encouraged to seek accreditation through the Health Service Chaplaincy board and to demonstrate supervised clinical pastoral education. Prison and Defence Forces chaplaincy posts are typically advertised by the Irish Prison Service and the Defence Forces respectively, each with their own additional selection criteria.
Many chaplains begin their careers in a voluntary or part-time capacity within a faith community, school, or hospital, building supervised pastoral experience alongside their studies. After completing a relevant degree and, often, a postgraduate qualification in pastoral care or counselling, you may secure a paid post as a hospital, school, or prison chaplain, typically at a junior or assistant grade. With experience and continued professional development, you can progress to lead or senior chaplain roles with responsibility for coordinating a chaplaincy team and shaping institutional pastoral policy. Some experienced chaplains move into lecturing, chaplaincy management, or specialist roles such as palliative care or Defence Forces chaplaincy.
The core of chaplaincy — human presence, compassionate listening, and spiritual accompaniment — is among the least automatable of all professional activities, and AI tools are unlikely to replace these relational dimensions of the role. However, AI-powered administrative systems can reduce paperwork burdens, freeing chaplains to spend more time with those in their care. Digital platforms and video-calling tools have already extended the reach of chaplaincy support to patients in isolation or in remote locations, a trend likely to continue. Chaplains may also use AI-assisted research tools to access theological resources, broaden their interfaith knowledge, or identify evidence-based pastoral care approaches.
