What does an IT Manager do?

As an IT Manager you are responsible for the smooth running of an organisation's entire technology function, overseeing everything from networks and servers to software systems and cybersecurity. You manage a team of IT staff, set priorities for day-to-day technical operations, and ensure that all systems meet the performance and security standards the business requires. You work closely with senior leadership, department heads, and external suppliers or vendors, negotiating contracts and managing service-level agreements. Monitoring key performance indicators, responding to incidents, and driving continuous improvement in IT processes are all central parts of your role. You also play a key part in shaping the organisation's technology strategy, making decisions about investment in new systems and infrastructure.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an IT Manager

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the office just before eight o'clock, grab a coffee, and open your laptop. Your first task is checking the overnight monitoring dashboard on your IT service management platform. A server in the finance department flagged an alert at three in the morning, so you read through the incident log left by the on-call engineer before joining a quick stand-up call with your team at half eight to assign priorities for the day. By nine o'clock you are in a meeting with the Head of Finance and the Head of HR to discuss the rollout of a new cloud-based payroll system. You have prepared a short briefing on data protection obligations under GDPR, because any system handling employee data must meet strict security standards. The conversation is slower than you had hoped because both managers have concerns about user training, and you take careful notes on what needs to go into the project plan.

Required Education

A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree is the typical minimum for this role in Ireland, with relevant subjects including computer science, information systems, software engineering, or business information technology, available at universities such as UCD, DCU, UL, and TU Dublin. Leaving Certificate subjects that strengthen your application include Mathematics, Computer Science, Business, and Physics. Some IT Managers enter through a Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree and build upward through experience and further study, while others progress via a Level 8 conversion or a Level 9 Masters in IT Management or Technology Management. Professional certifications such as ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library), PMP (Project Management Professional), CompTIA, or Cisco qualifications are highly valued in Ireland and often expected alongside a degree. There is no statutory registration body for IT Managers, but membership of professional organisations such as the Irish Computer Society (ICS) or Engineers Ireland can strengthen credibility.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most IT Managers in Ireland begin their careers in technical roles such as systems administrator, network engineer, or IT support analyst, building hands-on expertise over several years before moving into team leadership or project management positions. A progression through roles such as IT Team Lead or IT Project Manager typically precedes appointment as an IT Manager. With experience, you may advance to Head of IT, Director of Technology, or Chief Information Officer (CIO) in larger organisations. Pursuing further qualifications such as a Level 9 Masters in IT Management or an MBA with a technology focus can accelerate progression into senior leadership.

AI Impact on the job

AI is transforming the IT Manager's role by automating routine monitoring, incident detection, and service desk tasks, freeing up IT teams to focus on more complex and strategic work. You will increasingly be expected to evaluate and implement AI-powered tools for network management, predictive maintenance, and security threat detection. Decision-making in areas such as capacity planning and performance optimisation will be supported by AI-driven analytics, requiring you to develop strong data literacy alongside your technical and leadership skills. Rather than replacing the IT Manager, AI raises the bar for strategic thinking, as organisations look to IT leaders to guide responsible and effective adoption of emerging technologies.
