What will you learn?

A BSc (Hons) in Cybersecurity equips you with the technical skills to protect digital systems, networks, and data from threats and attacks. You will study areas such as ethical hacking, digital forensics, cryptography, network security, and incident response. Practical lab work is central to the programme — you will configure firewalls, conduct penetration tests, and analyse malware in controlled environments. Many programmes include a placement year with employers, and some offer Erasmus exchange opportunities across Europe. A typical week combines lectures, hands-on security labs, and team-based projects simulating real-world cyber incidents, giving you both technical depth and problem-solving experience.

Required Education

Entry is typically through the CAO, requiring a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects including English and Maths. Higher-level Maths is strongly advantageous and required by many institutions; a subject such as Physics or Computer Science is also useful. CAO points for this course are generally moderate to high and have been rising in recent years due to demand. Applicants holding a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 award in Computing, IT, or a related discipline can apply through the FET/QQI links route, often with specific distinctions required. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may apply through the mature-student entry route, and students with disabilities or from socio-economic disadvantage may access places through the DARE and HEAR schemes respectively.

Career Prospects

The outlook for cybersecurity graduates in Ireland is excellent, with demand consistently outstripping supply of qualified professionals. Ireland hosts a significant concentration of global technology and financial services companies, all with substantial cybersecurity needs. Salaries for entry-level roles typically start in the range of €35,000–€45,000 gross per annum, rising to €60,000–€90,000 or more for experienced security engineers and consultants. The field offers strong job security and clear pathways for career progression as cyber threats continue to evolve.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming cybersecurity, with AI-powered tools now used for threat detection, anomaly monitoring, and automated incident response. As a cybersecurity professional, you will need to understand how AI can both strengthen defences and be exploited by adversaries — for example, through AI-generated phishing attacks or adversarial machine learning. Courses are increasingly incorporating AI and machine learning modules to reflect this shift in the threat landscape. Rather than replacing cybersecurity roles, AI is creating new specialisms and raising the skill level required, making continuous learning essential.
