As a Registered General Nurse you assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate care for patients across a wide range of medical and surgical conditions. You monitor vital signs, administer medications, carry out clinical procedures, and respond promptly to changes in a patient's condition. Your daily work involves close collaboration with doctors, allied health professionals, healthcare assistants, and patients' families to ensure safe, person-centred care. You may work in acute hospital wards, emergency departments, day surgery units, community health centres, or GP practices. Documenting patient records accurately and maintaining strict hygiene and infection-control standards are central responsibilities in every setting.
Listen: a day as a Registered General Nurse
Your alarm goes off at 06:15. You are working the early shift on a busy medical ward in a regional hospital, so you need to be on the floor by 07:30 for handover. You pull on your uniform, make a quick coffee, and drive in. The car park is already half full when you arrive. Handover happens at the nursing station. The night-shift nurse runs through each of the sixteen patients on your bay using the ISBAR format — that stands for Identify, Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation — so you know exactly who needs attention first. One patient had a drop in oxygen saturation overnight; another is due to be discharged and needs discharge medications explained. You make brief notes on your clip-board.

Nursing Careers at Blackrock Clinic
Blackrock Health
A Leaving Certificate with strong results in Biology and Chemistry at Higher level is highly advantageous, along with English and Mathematics. The standard entry route is a four-year BSc in General Nursing (NFQ Level 8), offered at universities and technological universities including UCD, TCD, UCC, University of Galway, DCU, UL, TU Dublin, ATU, and SETU; entry is through the CAO and competition for places is keen. Some applicants come through a QQI Level 5 PLC course in Healthcare or Nursing Studies, which can provide an alternative pathway to the degree via CAO supplementary applications. On graduating, you must register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) before you can practise legally as a Registered General Nurse. Postgraduate study at NFQ Level 9 is available in specialist areas such as critical care, emergency nursing, or clinical management for those wishing to advance. Continuing professional development (CPD) is an ongoing NMBI registration requirement throughout your career.
Most Registered General Nurses begin their careers as staff nurses in HSE acute hospitals or private hospitals such as the Mater Private, Blackrock Health, or Bon Secours, typically rotating across different wards to broaden experience. After several years, many move into senior or specialist roles such as Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP), or Ward Sister/Charge Nurse. A postgraduate qualification at NFQ Level 9 opens pathways into critical care, theatre nursing, oncology, or community nursing with the HSE's Primary Care teams. With further experience and management training, nurses can progress to Director of Nursing or move into healthcare management, education, or policy roles.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly supporting nursing practice through AI-assisted monitoring systems that flag deteriorating patients, clinical decision-support tools that assist with medication checks, and predictive analytics that help manage ward staffing and patient flow. Administrative tasks such as discharge summaries and care-plan documentation are being streamlined through natural language processing tools, freeing up more time for direct patient care. However, the fundamentally human dimensions of nursing — physical care, emotional support, clinical touch, and complex ethical judgement — mean that AI serves as a tool to enhance rather than replace the nurse's role. Nurses who develop digital health literacy alongside their clinical skills will be well placed to lead safe and effective integration of these technologies.
