What will you learn?

This one-year PLC course gives you a solid foundation in the core sciences — biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics — preparing you for progression to third-level science, health or nursing programmes. You spend a significant portion of your time in laboratory settings, carrying out practicals in biology and chemistry alongside classroom-based theory. A typical week might include biology lectures, a chemistry lab session, maths tutorials and a written assignment or portfolio task. You also develop study and academic skills to help you manage university-style workloads. The course suits school-leavers who did not achieve the Leaving Certificate grades needed for direct entry to science or health degrees, or those who wish to strengthen their scientific background before applying through the CAO.

Required Education

Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate with passes in at least four subjects, including English and a science subject such as Biology or Chemistry. Higher-level Maths or Science subjects at Leaving Certificate are advantageous but not always mandatory, as the course itself builds on these foundations. No CAO points are required; you apply directly to the College of Further Education, and selection is usually based on Leaving Certificate results and sometimes an interview. On successful completion of the QQI Level 5 award, you can apply to Level 7 or Level 8 degree programmes through the CAO using QQI/FET points, with nursing and science programmes typically requiring distinctions in key modules. Mature students (aged 23 or over) are welcomed and may apply without a Leaving Certificate by demonstrating relevant life or work experience. HEAR and DARE applicants should check with individual colleges, as many ETB colleges have reserved places or supportive access arrangements.

Career Prospects

Demand for science-qualified graduates in Ireland remains strong, driven by the large multinational pharmaceutical and medtech sectors clustered around Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick. Completing this course and progressing to a Level 7 or Level 8 degree significantly improves your employment prospects and earning potential. Entry-level laboratory or technician roles typically attract salaries in the region of €28,000–€36,000 gross per year, rising considerably with experience and specialisation. Ireland's science sector continues to grow, making this a worthwhile progression route for students committed to a science-based career.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in scientific research, drug discovery and data analysis, meaning science graduates who understand both laboratory practice and data interpretation will be well placed. At this foundational level, AI tools may assist you with research, study planning and understanding complex concepts, but the hands-on laboratory skills you develop remain distinctly human. As you progress to degree level, you are likely to encounter AI-assisted analysis in areas such as genomics, clinical diagnostics and environmental monitoring. Embracing digital literacy alongside your science fundamentals will be an advantage in the evolving Irish science job market.
