As a Software Tester you are responsible for examining software applications to identify bugs, errors, and performance issues before they reach end users. You design and execute test plans, document the results of those tests, and work closely with developers, business analysts, and project managers to ensure that software meets agreed quality standards. Your day-to-day work involves running both manual tests and automated test scripts, replicating issues that customers or users have reported, and tracking defects through to resolution. You may operate across a wide range of sectors in Ireland, from multinational technology companies and financial services firms to government agencies and healthcare organisations.
Listen: a day as a Software Tester
You arrive at the office in Dublin city centre at half eight, grab a coffee, and open your laptop. Your team uses Jira to track all defects and tasks, so the first thing you do is check the board for any overnight alerts flagged by your automated test scripts, which ran while you were asleep. One script has reported a failure on the login page of the web application your team is currently testing for a financial services client. You log the failure with a clear description, the steps to reproduce it, and a screenshot, then assign it to the relevant developer. At nine o'clock the whole project team joins a brief stand-up meeting on Microsoft Teams. It lasts about fifteen minutes. You report the login issue, listen to updates from the developers, and note that a new build of the software will be deployed to the test environment by midday. Until then, you work through your test plan for the account-management module, running tests manually step by step and recording pass or fail results in a shared spreadsheet.
A Leaving Certificate with subjects such as Mathematics, Computer Science, and Physics can be a strong foundation for entry into this field. The most direct higher education route is a Level 7 or Level 8 degree in Computer Science, Software Development, or Information Technology offered at institutions such as TU Dublin, ATU, SETU, TUS, UCD, or DCU. A QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC course in Computing or Software Development, offered at Colleges of Further Education across Ireland, can also provide a realistic entry point, particularly for career changers. Some employers recruit directly from these further education programmes, especially for junior or trainee testing roles. There is no statutory professional registration body for software testers in Ireland, though industry certifications such as the ISTQB (International Software Testing Qualifications Board) Foundation certificate are widely valued by Irish employers.
Many software testers begin in junior or trainee QA (Quality Assurance) roles, often after completing a computing degree or PLC course, sometimes supported by an ISTQB Foundation certification. With a few years of experience you can progress to mid-level QA Analyst or Test Analyst positions, taking on greater responsibility for test strategy and mentoring junior colleagues. From there, experienced testers often move into roles such as Senior QA Engineer, Test Lead, or Test Manager, overseeing entire quality assurance processes for products or teams. Some testers also pivot into related roles such as Business Analyst, DevOps Engineer, or Software Developer as they broaden their technical skills.
AI-powered testing tools are automating many repetitive aspects of software testing, such as generating basic test cases, running regression suites, and identifying common code defects, which means testers who rely solely on manual testing may find their role evolving significantly. However, AI also creates new opportunities for testers who can use these tools effectively, validate AI-generated outputs, and design testing strategies for AI-based systems themselves. The human judgement required to understand user experience, interpret ambiguous requirements, and assess risk remains difficult for AI to fully replicate. Testers who develop skills in test automation, AI tool integration, and exploratory testing are well placed to remain in demand.
