Software Development (Level 7)

Tech & Engineering

Duration

Level

What will you learn?

This course gives you hands-on skills in writing, testing, and maintaining software applications. You study programming languages such as Python, Java, and JavaScript alongside web development, database design, and software testing. A typical week involves a mix of lectures, lab sessions where you write and debug code, and team-based project work that mirrors real workplace scenarios. Many programmes include a work placement semester in industry, where you gain experience with Irish tech companies or multinationals. Some campuses offer modules in cloud computing, cybersecurity, or mobile app development as you progress, allowing you to build a specialism. The focus throughout is practical and project-driven rather than heavily theoretical.

Required Education

Entry is typically through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate, and points requirements are generally moderate, reflecting strong regional demand. You will need to meet the standard minimum entry requirements, usually including English and Maths at Ordinary level, though Higher-level Maths is an advantage and may be preferred. Subjects such as Computer Science, Applied Maths, or Physics are useful but rarely mandatory. QQI Level 5 or 6 FET/PLC awards in Computing or IT provide a well-established progression route into Level 7 programmes at these technological universities. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly through the CAO mature-student pathway, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are available for eligible applicants. Some institutions also accept LCVP candidates with relevant distinctions.

Career Prospects

Graduate employment rates in software development remain high in Ireland, driven by consistent demand from the multinational technology sector and expanding domestic firms. Level 7 graduates are well regarded for practical, job-ready skills and many secure roles before completing their final year. Salaries for junior developers typically start in the region of €32,000–€40,000 gross per annum, with clear progression as experience grows. The option to add on a Level 8 Honours degree means career prospects and earning potential can be significantly enhanced with one further year of study.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence tools such as GitHub Copilot and AI-assisted code review are already part of the working environment for software developers, and this course increasingly incorporates awareness of these tools. AI is changing the nature of some routine coding tasks, but demand for developers who can understand, test, validate, and integrate AI-generated code remains strong. Students are expected to develop critical thinking about when and how to use AI tools responsibly. The overall effect is likely to shift emphasis towards higher-level problem-solving, software architecture, and quality assurance rather than reducing the need for developers.
