What does a Scrum Master do?

As a Scrum Master you facilitate agile software development teams, helping them to deliver high-quality products through structured sprints and continuous improvement. You run daily stand-ups, sprint planning sessions, retrospectives, and sprint reviews, ensuring the team follows Scrum principles and removes any obstacles that slow progress. You act as a servant-leader, shielding the team from external distractions while maintaining close communication with product owners, stakeholders, and other Scrum Masters across the organisation. In Ireland you will most commonly find yourself working in multinational technology companies, financial services firms, or large domestic organisations that have adopted agile ways of working.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Scrum Master

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at your desk in a Dublin city-centre tech office at half eight, grab a coffee, and open Jira to check the sprint board before anyone else logs on. The team is mid-way through a two-week sprint, and you want to see whether the three user stories that were still in progress yesterday have moved along overnight. One of the developers is working remotely from Galway, so you also check Slack for any messages they may have left late the previous evening. At nine o'clock you run the daily stand-up on Microsoft Teams. Each of the seven team members answers three quick questions: what did they do yesterday, what are they doing today, and is anything blocking them? You keep it to fifteen minutes maximum. One of the back-end developers flags that they are waiting on access credentials from the infrastructure team. You note this immediately as an impediment and send a message to the relevant contact before the stand-up has even finished.

Required Education

Most Scrum Masters in Ireland hold an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree, typically in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Business Information Systems, or a related discipline offered at universities such as UCD, DCU, TU Dublin, or the University of Galway. Leaving Certificate subjects that strengthen your application include Mathematics, Computer Science, Business, and Applied Mathematics. Some practitioners enter via a Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree combined with relevant industry experience and professional certification. Formal Scrum certification — such as the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) from Scrum Alliance or Professional Scrum Master (PSM) from Scrum.org — is widely expected by Irish employers and is often the most decisive qualification on your CV. Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) certification is increasingly sought in larger organisations running multiple agile teams. There is no statutory registration body for this role, so ongoing professional development and certification renewal are your own responsibility.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Many Scrum Masters begin their careers as software developers, business analysts, or QA engineers before moving into the role after completing Scrum certification and gaining exposure to agile teams. From there, progression typically leads to Senior Scrum Master, where you support multiple teams simultaneously, and then to Agile Coach, overseeing an organisation's entire agile transformation. In larger Irish multinationals and financial institutions, experienced practitioners can move into Release Train Engineer roles within the SAFe framework or transition into Programme Management and Head of Delivery positions. Combining agile expertise with domain knowledge in areas such as fintech, medtech, or cloud services makes you particularly competitive in the Irish market.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered project management tools are beginning to automate routine Scrum artefacts such as sprint reporting, velocity forecasting, and meeting summaries, reducing administrative overhead for Scrum Masters. However, the human-centred aspects of the role — coaching, conflict resolution, and facilitating genuine team collaboration — remain largely beyond the reach of current AI systems. AI can surface patterns in team performance data far more quickly than manual analysis, allowing Scrum Masters to intervene earlier and with greater precision. Overall, AI is likely to augment rather than replace the Scrum Master role, shifting the focus further towards coaching and organisational change leadership.
