As a Platform Engineer you design, build and maintain the internal developer platforms and infrastructure that software teams rely on every day. Your work spans containerisation tools such as Kubernetes, continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, and cloud environments hosted on providers like AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. You collaborate closely with software developers, DevOps engineers, site-reliability engineers and security teams to ensure systems are scalable, resilient and secure. Much of your day involves automating repetitive operational tasks, reviewing infrastructure-as-code, and troubleshooting performance or deployment issues across staging and production environments.
Listen: a day as a Platform Engineer
You arrive at the office in Dublin's docklands just before nine o'clock, grab a coffee, and open your laptop. The first thing you do is check the alerts that fired overnight in your monitoring tool, Grafana. One staging environment on your AWS cluster shows elevated memory usage, and you flag it in the team's Slack channel before the stand-up starts. At nine-fifteen the whole platform team joins a short daily stand-up on Google Meet. There are six of you — two senior engineers, two mid-level engineers including yourself, a DevOps engineer and a site-reliability engineer. You mention the memory alert and agree to pair with the SRE after lunch to investigate the root cause.
A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline is the most common entry route, with CAO applications made through the CAO system to universities such as UCD, TCD, DCU, UL or technological universities including TU Dublin and ATU. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, and Applied Mathematics provide strong foundations, while Computer Science (where offered) is increasingly valuable. Some candidates enter via a Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree and progress through a Level 9 Masters in Cloud Computing, Software Engineering or Distributed Systems. There is no statutory professional registration body for platform engineering in Ireland, but industry certifications such as Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), AWS Solutions Architect or Google Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer are highly regarded by employers. A smaller number of practitioners transition from a QQI Level 6 Higher Certificate or PLC background by building hands-on experience alongside self-study and vendor certifications.
Most platform engineers begin their careers in Ireland as junior DevOps engineers, cloud engineers or software developers, building hands-on experience with cloud and infrastructure tooling over two to three years. With demonstrated expertise in Kubernetes, CI/CD and platform reliability, progression to a Platform Engineer or Senior Platform Engineer role is typical within four to six years. Senior practitioners often move into Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer or Platform Architecture roles, shaping the technical direction of engineering organisations. In larger Irish technology firms and multinationals, experienced platform engineers may advance into Engineering Manager or Head of Platform Engineering positions with broader people and budgetary responsibilities.
AI-powered tools such as GitHub Copilot and AI-assisted infrastructure generation are already changing how platform engineers write scripts, review code and debug pipeline failures, accelerating routine tasks considerably. Intelligent observability platforms increasingly use machine learning to detect anomalies and predict failures before they affect users, shifting the engineer's focus from reactive firefighting toward proactive system design. However, the complexity of designing secure, large-scale platforms and the judgement required to balance competing operational concerns means that platform engineering remains a strongly human-led discipline. AI is best understood as augmenting a platform engineer's output rather than replacing the role, and familiarity with AI tooling is fast becoming an expected professional competency.
