Network Management and Cloud Infrastructure

Tech & Engineering

Duration

4 years

Level

Bachelor

Outlook

What will you learn?

This course gives you a thorough grounding in how computer networks are designed, configured, and maintained, with a strong focus on cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. You learn how data centres operate, how to manage virtualised infrastructure, and how to keep networks secure and running reliably. Practical labs form the backbone of your week — you spend significant time configuring routers, switches, firewalls, and cloud environments using industry-standard Cisco equipment and software. Many programmes include work placements in the third year with ISPs, data-centre operators, or large enterprises, giving you real-world exposure. Industry certifications such as Cisco CCNA and CompTIA Cloud+ are often embedded in or aligned with the curriculum.

Required Education

Entry is typically through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate, requiring a minimum of five O6/H7 grades including English or Irish, with Mathematics being particularly important — Higher Level Maths is strongly advantageous and some providers require at least an O4 at Ordinary Level. Points requirements are moderate, reflecting steady but not hyper-competitive demand. QQI Level 5 or 6 FET awards in Computing, IT Networking, or related disciplines provide a well-established progression route into first or second year, and many colleges have formal articulation agreements with local ETBs. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through the mature-student CAO stream and are typically assessed by interview or a short aptitude test. HEAR and DARE access programmes are available at participating institutions for applicants with socioeconomic disadvantage or disabilities.

Career Prospects

The outlook for graduates in Ireland is strong, driven by continued growth in cloud adoption, data-centre construction, and cybersecurity investment. Ireland hosts one of the highest concentrations of hyperscale data centres in Europe, creating sustained local demand for infrastructure professionals. Starting salaries for graduates typically range from around €30,000 to €38,000 per year, rising considerably with experience and vendor certifications. Professionals with five or more years of experience and cloud certifications can expect salaries in the €55,000 to €75,000 range or above.

Impact of AI on this program

AI-driven network management tools are increasingly automating routine tasks such as fault detection, traffic optimisation, and configuration auditing, meaning graduates need to be comfortable working alongside intelligent monitoring platforms. Skills in network automation using tools like Ansible and Python scripting are becoming essential, as AI tools rely on structured, well-managed infrastructure to function effectively. However, human expertise remains critical for architecture decisions, security incident response, and complex troubleshooting that AI tools cannot yet reliably handle. Graduates who understand both the underlying networking principles and how to leverage AI-assisted tools will be best positioned in this evolving field.

How to apply

Undergraduate BSc programmes in this field are applied for through the CAO (cao.ie) by 1 February each year, with a late fee accepted until 1 March; applicants typically need Leaving Certificate Mathematics at OL/HL and English or Irish. Some programmes at NCI and the technological universities also accept mature applicants and QQI FET Level 5/6 award holders via separate CAO pathways.
