What will you learn?

A Software Development degree teaches you how to design, build, test, and maintain software applications across a wide range of platforms and environments. You will study programming languages such as Python, Java, and JavaScript alongside databases, web development, mobile app development, and software engineering principles. Practical work is central to the programme — you will complete real-world projects, often in collaboration with industry partners, and many courses include a work placement semester where you gain hands-on experience in a tech company. A typical week involves a mix of lectures, lab sessions writing and debugging code, and group project work. Some programmes offer opportunities to study abroad through Erasmus+ partnerships.

Required Education

Entry is typically through the CAO, requiring a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects including Mathematics and English or Irish. Higher Level Mathematics is strongly recommended and may be required by some institutions, as it demonstrates the logical and analytical thinking central to software development. CAO points requirements are generally moderate compared to university-level Computer Science degrees, making this an accessible route into the tech sector. If you do not meet the entry requirements directly, a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC award in Computing or IT provides a well-established progression route into the Level 7 programme. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through the mature student entry process, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are available at participating institutions for those who qualify.

Career Prospects

Graduate prospects in software development are strong, with Ireland consistently experiencing high demand for skilled developers across all regions. The Irish tech sector continues to grow, supported by a high concentration of multinational technology companies with European headquarters in Dublin and regional offices around the country. Unemployment among software development graduates is low, and starting salaries are competitive. Many graduates progress quickly into mid-level roles within two to three years of entering the workforce.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence tools such as GitHub Copilot and large language model-based coding assistants are already changing how developers write and review code, and you will likely encounter and use these tools during your studies. AI is automating aspects of routine coding, documentation, and testing, which raises the bar for developers to focus on system design, problem-solving, and code quality. However, demand for skilled software developers in Ireland remains high, and AI is generally seen as augmenting rather than replacing developer roles in the near term. Understanding how AI tools work and how to use them effectively is increasingly becoming a core professional skill in this field.
