What does a Backend Developer do?

As a Backend Developer you design, build and maintain the server-side logic, databases and APIs that power web and mobile applications. Your day-to-day work involves writing clean, efficient code in languages such as Java, Python or C# (.NET), creating and maintaining RESTful APIs, and ensuring that data flows securely and reliably between databases and front-end systems. You collaborate closely with frontend developers, DevOps engineers, product managers and QA testers to deliver software that meets both technical and business requirements. In Ireland you are likely to work within product companies, financial technology firms, multinational tech giants or banking and insurance organisations.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Backend Developer

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the office or open your laptop at home just before nine o'clock. Your company uses Slack for team communication, so you spend the first fifteen minutes scanning overnight messages and checking the JIRA board — the project-management tool where tasks, bugs and new features are tracked as tickets. A QA tester has flagged that an API endpoint you built last week is returning incorrect data in certain edge cases, and that goes straight to the top of your to-do list. By half nine you are in the daily stand-up, a short video call with your squad: two frontend developers, a DevOps engineer and a product manager. Everyone says what they worked on yesterday, what they plan to do today and whether anything is blocking them. It lasts about fifteen minutes and keeps everyone aligned without long meetings eating into coding time.

Required Education

A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related computing discipline is the most common entry route, available at universities such as UCD, TCD, DCU, University of Galway and technological universities including TU Dublin and MTU. Useful Leaving Certificate subjects include Mathematics (Higher Level is strongly recommended), Computer Science, Physics and Applied Mathematics. For those who have a degree in another discipline, a Level 9 NFQ conversion postgraduate programme in Computing or Software Development — widely offered and often funded through Springboard+ — is a recognised alternative pathway into backend development. Some QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC courses in software development can provide a foundation, though most employers in this specialism expect at least an NFQ Level 8 qualification or demonstrable professional experience. No statutory registration body is required for this role, but professional membership of Engineers Ireland or the Irish Computer Society is respected by employers.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most backend developers begin as a junior or graduate software developer, often joining a structured graduate programme in a multinational tech firm or a growing Irish fintech. With two to four years of experience you typically progress to a mid-level developer role with greater autonomy over system design and mentoring responsibilities. Senior backend developer positions follow, where you lead technical decisions, conduct code reviews and contribute to architectural planning. From there, paths diverge towards engineering management, solutions architecture or principal/staff engineer roles depending on individual strengths and interests.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot are already integrated into many Irish development teams, automating the generation of boilerplate code and accelerating routine tasks. This shifts emphasis towards higher-level skills such as system design, code review, security and the ability to critically evaluate AI-generated output rather than simply produce code line by line. Backend developers who understand how to integrate machine-learning APIs and large language model services into applications are increasingly sought after by product and banking teams. Overall, AI is expected to augment rather than replace this role, with demand remaining high for developers who can combine technical depth with architectural judgement.
