As a Salesforce Administrator you configure, manage, and optimise a company's Salesforce CRM platform to match its specific business processes and user needs. Your daily work involves setting up user accounts and roles, building automation workflows, creating custom reports and dashboards, and adjusting system settings so that sales, marketing, and customer service teams can work efficiently. You gather requirements from colleagues across the business, translate those requirements into Salesforce configurations, and document any changes you make so that the system remains reliable and auditable. You work closely with sales managers, IT colleagues, and sometimes external Salesforce consultants or developers to roll out new features and resolve issues.
Listen: a day as a Salesforce Administrator
You arrive at your open-plan office in Dublin city centre at half eight, grab a coffee, and open your inbox. Overnight, three colleagues have flagged issues in Salesforce, the customer relationship management platform your company uses to track sales, leads, and customer interactions. You log in to the platform and work through the tickets in order of urgency. The first is straightforward: a sales rep in Galway cannot see the accounts assigned to her because her user profile has the wrong role. You correct it in under ten minutes and send her a quick message to confirm. By half nine you are in a video call with the marketing manager and two members of the sales team. They want a new automated workflow built so that when a sales opportunity reaches a certain stage, a task is automatically created for a senior account manager to follow up. You take careful notes, ask clarifying questions, and tell them you will have a draft ready for testing by the end of the week.
A Level 7 or Level 8 degree in Computing, Information Systems, Business Information Technology, or a related field at a technological university or university is a common entry route, though the role is notably certification-led. Salesforce offers its own globally recognised certification pathway — starting with Salesforce Certified Administrator — which many Irish employers treat as essential regardless of academic background. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Maths, Applied Maths, Computer Science, and Business provide a helpful foundation for third-level computing or business-IT programmes. PLC courses at Level 5 or 6 in IT or business systems can provide an alternative stepping stone, particularly if combined with Salesforce certification. Springboard+ funded programmes have also offered Salesforce-specific upskilling courses at NFQ Level 6–8 for those changing career. There is no statutory professional registration body for this role, but maintaining active Salesforce certification through annual re-certification is a practical industry requirement.
Many Salesforce Administrators begin in junior IT support or business analyst roles before specialising, or move directly into the role after completing a relevant degree and Salesforce certification. With experience, you can progress to Senior Salesforce Administrator, taking on more complex configurations and acting as a platform owner for larger organisations. From there, common progressions include Salesforce Business Analyst, Salesforce Consultant, or Salesforce Developer, with some professionals pursuing advanced certifications such as Platform App Builder or Salesforce Architect credentials. Ireland's strong base of multinational technology and professional services firms means that experienced Salesforce professionals are often recruited into regional or EMEA-scoped roles based here.
AI is increasingly embedded in the Salesforce platform itself through features such as Einstein AI, which automates lead scoring, opportunity insights, and customer service suggestions, changing how administrators configure and govern the system. Administrators are now expected to understand how to set up, monitor, and explain AI-driven features to business users, adding a new layer of technical responsibility. Routine configuration tasks and report building may be partially assisted by AI tools, freeing administrators to focus on more strategic platform design and governance work. Overall, AI is likely to raise the complexity and value of the role rather than reduce demand for skilled Salesforce professionals.
