As an ERP Consultant you implement, configure and optimise Enterprise Resource Planning systems such as SAP, Microsoft Dynamics or NetSuite for client organisations across Ireland. Your daily work involves analysing existing business processes, gathering requirements from stakeholders, and mapping those requirements onto the ERP platform to ensure the system fits how the business actually operates. You collaborate closely with project managers, software developers, finance teams and end-users to test new configurations, resolve issues and deliver training before and after go-live. Much of your work takes place within IT consultancy firms or in shared service centres, where you may work across multiple client accounts simultaneously, often to tight project deadlines.
Listen: a day as an ERP Consultant
You are at your desk in a glass-fronted consultancy office on the quays in Dublin by 8:30 a.m., coffee in hand, working through your emails before the day properly begins. A manufacturing client in Athlone has flagged an overnight error in their SAP system — a purchase order workflow is not routing correctly to the approvals queue. You log into the SAP sandbox environment, replicate the issue and start tracing the configuration back through the system. By 9:15 a.m. you are on a Microsoft Teams call with the client's finance manager and their internal IT lead. You share your screen, walk them through what you have found and agree a fix. You update the project issue log and notify the project manager so she can adjust the risk register before this afternoon's status meeting.
Most ERP Consultants enter the field with an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in a discipline such as Business Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology or Accounting with IT. Useful Leaving Certificate subjects include Mathematics, Business, Accounting, Economics and Applied Mathematics, as these underpin both the technical and business analysis aspects of the role. CAO entry is competitive; relevant courses are offered at institutions such as UCD, DCU, TU Dublin, University of Galway and UL. A postgraduate conversion course or a Level 9 Masters in Information Systems or Business Analytics can strengthen your profile, particularly if your primary degree was in a non-IT field. Vendor-specific certifications such as SAP Certified Application Associate, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Functional Consultant or NetSuite SuiteFoundation are highly valued by employers and are often completed on the job or funded by your employer. There is no statutory registration body for this role, though membership of professional groups such as Engineers Ireland or IIBA (International Institute of Business Analysis) is beneficial.
Most ERP Consultants begin as Junior or Associate Consultants within an IT consultancy firm or a large shared service centre, working under supervision on a specific ERP module such as finance, procurement or HR. With two to four years of hands-on project experience, you typically progress to a Consultant or Senior Consultant role, taking ownership of full project workstreams and managing client relationships directly. At the senior level you may become an ERP Solution Architect, Practice Lead or Principal Consultant, designing end-to-end ERP strategies for large organisations and mentoring junior colleagues. From there, pathways lead into IT Director, Head of Digital Transformation or independent consulting roles, particularly as experience with multiple ERP platforms becomes a strong commercial asset.
AI-powered tools are beginning to automate elements of requirements documentation, data migration mapping and routine report generation within ERP environments, reducing the time spent on repetitive analytical tasks. Platforms such as SAP Business AI and Microsoft Copilot are embedding intelligent automation directly into ERP interfaces, meaning consultants must understand how to configure and govern these features as part of standard implementations. However, the core value of an ERP Consultant — understanding an organisation's unique processes, managing stakeholder relationships and guiding change — remains firmly human-centred and difficult to automate. Consultants who develop expertise in AI-integrated ERP modules and prompt engineering for business analysis will be particularly well positioned in the evolving market.
