Database Developer

As a Database Developer you design, build and maintain the database systems that store and organise the data Irish organisations depend on every day. You write and optimise queries, develop stored procedures and scripts, and implement data extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) pipelines to move information between systems efficiently. Your work involves close collaboration with software developers, data analysts and business stakeholders to make sure databases meet performance, security and reliability requirements. You also carry out regular backups, monitor database health and write clear technical documentation so that your colleagues can work with the systems you create.

A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Software Development, Information Systems or a related computing discipline is the most common entry route, with CAO applications made through the Central Applications Office. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at Higher level provide strong preparation for these programmes, offered at institutions including TU Dublin, UCD, UCC, DCU and University of Galway. A Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor in Computing or a related field can also lead to graduate-entry roles, with the option to progress to Level 8 through add-on years. Those without a primary degree may enter via a QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC in Computing, followed by a Higher Diploma (Level 8) in Data Analytics or Computer Science, available as a one-year conversion programme at many technological universities. Postgraduate specialisation at NFQ Level 9, such as an MSc in Data Science or Database Systems, is increasingly valued for senior technical roles. No statutory professional registration body exists for this occupation, though membership of professional organisations such as the Irish Computer Society (ICS) is regarded positively by employers.
