As an Energy Consultant you advise businesses, public bodies, and sometimes homeowners on how to reduce their energy consumption, lower costs, and cut their carbon footprint. Your day-to-day work involves carrying out energy audits of buildings and facilities, analysing consumption data, and recommending energy-efficient technologies or renewable energy solutions. You may prepare Building Energy Rating (BER) assessments, advise on government grant schemes such as those administered by the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland), and help clients navigate complex energy tariffs. You typically collaborate with engineers, architects, facilities managers, and procurement teams, and you may work for an engineering or management consultancy, a specialist energy firm, or operate as an independent practitioner.
Listen: a day as an Energy Consultant
You arrive at your consultancy's Dublin office at 8:15 a.m. and spend the first half hour reviewing emails from clients and checking updates from the SEAI portal, where grant applications you submitted last week may have moved status. There is a query from a county council facilities manager about whether a secondary school qualifies for a particular non-domestic energy efficiency scheme, so you flag that to deal with after your site visit. By 9:00 a.m. you are in the car heading to a medium-sized food manufacturing plant in County Kildare. You carry a calibrated thermal imaging camera, a data logger, and a clipboard loaded with audit templates. On site, you walk the factory floor with the maintenance engineer, recording lighting loads, compressed-air system pressures, and the age of the industrial refrigeration units. It is noisy and cold in places, and you spend a lot of time copying meter readings from awkward locations.
A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree is the typical entry point for this role in Ireland, with relevant programmes including Energy Systems Engineering, Environmental Science, Building Services Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering available at universities and technological universities such as TU Dublin, UL, and ATU. Leaving Certificate subjects that provide a strong foundation include Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Geography. Postgraduate programmes at NFQ Level 9, such as a Master's in Sustainable Energy or Energy Management, are increasingly valued and may be required for more senior consultancy positions. SEAI-accredited BER Assessor registration is often required for roles involving building energy assessments, and broader professional development through bodies such as Engineers Ireland or the Energy Institute is common. Some practitioners enter the field via a Level 7 degree in a related engineering or environmental discipline and build expertise through continuing professional development. Springboard+ funded courses also offer upskilling routes for those transitioning into the energy sector from related fields.
Most Energy Consultants begin their careers as graduate engineers or junior energy analysts within consultancy firms, working alongside experienced practitioners on audits and assessment projects. With three to five years of experience, you would typically progress to a fully autonomous consultant role, managing your own client portfolio and potentially specialising in areas such as renewable energy procurement, LEED or BREEAM certification, or large-scale industrial energy management. Senior consultants often take on project director or practice lead responsibilities, overseeing junior staff and winning new business. Experienced practitioners may move into regulatory roles with the SEAI or the Commission for Regulation of Utilities, or establish their own independent consultancy.
AI and advanced data analytics tools are changing how Energy Consultants work by automating the collection and preliminary analysis of energy consumption data, making audits faster and more accurate. Building energy modelling software, increasingly enhanced by machine learning, allows you to simulate the impact of proposed interventions with greater precision before any work is carried out. However, the consultancy relationship — understanding a client's specific circumstances, navigating grant processes, and managing stakeholder expectations — remains distinctly human work that AI cannot replace. Consultants who embrace AI-assisted tools for monitoring, reporting, and predictive maintenance will be better placed to handle larger and more complex projects.
