Retail & Customer Service
As an E-commerce Fulfilment Assistant you pick, pack and dispatch customer orders placed through online retail platforms, working in a distribution centre or warehouse environment. You use handheld scanners and warehouse management systems to locate products, verify order accuracy and meet daily pick-rate targets. Your day-to-day tasks include receiving incoming stock, labelling goods, checking for damage, and preparing parcels for courier collection. You work alongside team leaders, logistics coordinators and fellow operatives, and communicate regularly with despatch and inventory teams to ensure orders leave on time and in good condition.
Listen: a day as an E-commerce Fulfilment Assistant
Your alarm goes off at 5.45 a.m. You are on the early shift, starting at 7.00 a.m. at a distribution centre on an industrial estate outside town. You clock in, pull on your hi-vis vest and steel-toe boots, and attend a brief team huddle where the shift supervisor runs through the day's order volume and any pick-rate targets the centre needs to hit before the courier collection window at 2.00 p.m. By 7.15 a.m. you are out on the warehouse floor with a handheld scanner. The warehouse management system sends picking tasks to your device one by one. You walk the aisles, scan the shelf barcode, pick the correct item, scan it again to confirm, and place it in your trolley tote. You repeat this dozens of times over the next two hours. The floor is busy but organised, and you quickly learn the logic of how products are slotted across the racking.
Formal academic qualifications are not always required for this role, as many employers in Ireland hire directly from school-leavers or those with some work experience. A Junior Certificate or Leaving Certificate provides a helpful foundation, particularly if you have studied subjects such as Business or Maths. A QQI Level 5 Certificate in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, available through many Education and Training Board (ETB) colleges and Colleges of Further Education, is a recognised route into the sector. Some larger distribution employers, such as those operating fulfilment centres for major online retailers, offer on-the-job training and progression programmes. No statutory professional registration is required for this role.
Most people enter this role directly from school or further education and build practical skills quickly through on-the-job experience. With time, you can progress to a senior operative or team leader position, taking responsibility for a section of the warehouse or a shift team. Further study, such as a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Logistics or a Level 7/8 degree in Supply Chain Management, can open doors to supervisory, inventory or operations management roles. Experienced professionals in Irish distribution and retail logistics can advance into warehouse management, logistics coordination or procurement careers.
Automation and AI-driven robotics are increasingly being introduced into large fulfilment centres in Ireland and globally, with automated guided vehicles and robotic picking systems taking over some repetitive tasks. This means that operatives who can work alongside automated systems, interpret warehouse management software and troubleshoot technology issues will be more valuable than those with purely manual skills. While entry-level picking roles may be reduced in the most automated facilities, roles involving quality checking, exception handling and system oversight are likely to remain. Upskilling in warehouse technology and logistics software will help you remain competitive as the sector evolves.
