What will you learn?

This QQI Level 5 programme gives you practical, hands-on training in the day-to-day operations of warehouses and distribution centres. You will learn how to safely operate counterbalance forklifts, manage stock using computerised inventory systems, and apply health and safety regulations relevant to the logistics sector. Modules cover goods receiving, picking and packing, load securing, and dispatch procedures. A typical week combines classroom sessions on warehouse management theory with extensive practical time in a simulated or real warehouse environment. Many programmes include a work placement with a distribution company, giving you direct industry experience alongside your studies.

Required Education

Entry to this QQI Level 5 programme typically requires a Junior Certificate or equivalent, though some ETB providers accept applicants with relevant work experience in lieu of formal qualifications. There are no specific Higher-level Leaving Certificate requirements, making this an accessible route for school leavers and career changers alike. English literacy and basic numeracy are important, as you will work with stock control systems and documentation. Mature applicants aged 23 or over can apply directly through the college and are assessed on life and work experience. HEAR and DARE supports may be available through participating ETBs for eligible applicants.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified warehouse operatives and forklift operators in Ireland remains consistently strong, driven by the continued growth of e-commerce and pharmaceutical distribution. The counterbalance licence you earn during this programme is a recognised and transferable credential valued by employers nationwide. Starting salaries typically range from around €28,000 to €34,000 per year, with experienced stock controllers or logistics supervisors earning €38,000 or more. Shift premiums and overtime are common in this sector, which can meaningfully increase take-home pay.

Impact of AI on this program

AI-driven warehouse management systems are increasingly being adopted by large distribution centres in Ireland, automating tasks such as stock replenishment alerts, route optimisation for picking, and predictive inventory management. As an operative, you will need to work alongside these systems rather than be replaced by them, since physical handling, safety judgement, and equipment operation remain human-led tasks. Understanding how to interpret data from these platforms is becoming a useful skill, and this course introduces you to the digital tools already in use. Roles involving purely manual record-keeping are reducing, while those requiring digital literacy alongside physical competence are growing.
