What does a Warehouse Supervisor do?

As a Warehouse Supervisor you oversee the day-to-day running of a warehouse shift, ensuring that goods are received, stored, picked, packed, and dispatched accurately and on time. You monitor pick rates and stock accuracy, carry out regular cycle counts, and make sure all health and safety procedures are followed on the floor. You manage a team that often includes a mix of permanent employees and agency staff, briefing them at the start of each shift and dealing with any issues that arise. You liaise with logistics coordinators, transport planners, and suppliers to keep stock levels correct and meet outbound delivery targets.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Warehouse Supervisor

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 5:45 am. You are on the early shift at a large distribution centre outside Naas, Co. Kildare, and you need to be on the floor by 6:30 am. You grab your hi-vis vest and steel-toed boots from the locker, check overnight messages on your handheld scanner device, and pull up the shift report on the warehouse management system — in this case, a system called Snapfulfil — to see how many orders are queued for the day. At 6:30 am you hold a ten-minute team brief in the loading bay area. You have fourteen people on today: eight permanent staff and six from a local agency. You run through the day's targets — 340 outbound pallets before the 3:00 pm transport cut-off — and remind everyone about the wet floor near Bay 4 after last night's leak. You assign picking zones, note who has a forklift licence and who is still waiting on their RTITB certification, and answer a couple of questions before everyone disperses.

Required Education

There is no single mandatory qualification to become a Warehouse Supervisor in Ireland, and many people work their way up from an operative or picker role. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Business, Mathematics, and Irish or English are useful for the administrative and communication side of the role. A QQI Level 5 or Level 6 award in Logistics, Supply Chain Operations, or Business Administration — available through PLC courses in Colleges of Further Education — gives a strong foundation and is a common entry point for supervisory roles. Some employers also value a Level 7 or Level 8 degree in Supply Chain Management or Business Logistics, offered at institutions such as TU Dublin, ATU, and TUS. Forklift licences, manual handling certificates, and safety statements awareness (aligned with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act) are practical requirements that most employers expect.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Warehouse Supervisors start out as warehouse operatives or pickers, gaining experience before taking on a team leader or supervisor role, often after two to four years on the floor. From supervisor level you can progress to Warehouse Manager or Operations Manager, taking responsibility for an entire facility rather than a single shift. With further experience and possibly a Level 8 or Level 9 qualification in supply chain or logistics, you could move into roles such as Distribution Centre Manager, Head of Logistics, or Supply Chain Manager. Some supervisors also move laterally into inventory planning, procurement, or transport coordination.

AI Impact on the job

AI and automation are changing warehouse operations through the introduction of automated guided vehicles (AGVs), robotic picking systems, and AI-driven demand forecasting tools. As a supervisor, you will increasingly oversee both human workers and automated systems, requiring you to understand how these technologies interact on the floor. AI-powered WMS platforms can flag stock discrepancies and predict capacity shortfalls in real time, making your data-analysis skills more important than ever. Rather than replacing supervisors, these tools shift the focus towards exception management, performance analysis, and continuous improvement.
