As a Vehicle Maintenance Attendant you carry out routine servicing and basic mechanical tasks on cars, vans, buses, and coaches at garages, fleet depots, or fast-fit centres. Your day-to-day duties include changing engine oil and filters, replacing spark plugs, checking tyre pressures, topping up fluids, and carrying out pre-inspection checks to keep vehicles roadworthy. You work closely with senior mechanics, fleet supervisors, and sometimes directly with drivers or customers to ensure vehicles are returned to service quickly and safely. You are also responsible for keeping your work area clean and tidy, following health and safety procedures when handling chemicals and lubricants, and accurately recording the work completed on each vehicle.
Listen: a day as a Vehicle Maintenance Attendant
Your alarm goes off at half six. You are working a seven-thirty start at a fleet depot on the outskirts of a mid-sized Irish town, where the company runs a mix of vans and light commercial vehicles. You cycle in, change into your overalls in the welfare room, and grab a quick coffee before the morning briefing at quarter to eight. The fleet supervisor runs through the job sheet on the whiteboard: six vehicles are due routine servicing today, and one van has come back from a driver reporting a warning light on the dashboard. By eight o'clock you are underneath your first vehicle on the ramp. You drain the old engine oil into a collection drum — waste oil has to be stored correctly under Irish environmental regulations — swap out the oil filter, and refill with the grade specified in the manufacturer's handbook. Everything you do gets logged on a paper job card and later entered into the depot's fleet management software.
Entry into this role typically does not require a Leaving Certificate, though subjects such as Engineering, Technology, and Construction Studies are useful if you have completed Junior or Senior Cycle. Many employers recruit school leavers at QQI NFQ Level 4 and provide structured on-the-job training alongside a QQI Level 4 or Level 5 programme in Vehicle Technology or Engineering. Some entrants progress through a SOLAS-registered Motor Mechanic apprenticeship, which leads to a NFQ Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft and provides a clear path into higher-skilled work. Colleges of Further Education and ETBs across Ireland offer PLC courses in Motor Vehicle Technology at Level 5, which can serve as a stepping stone into the apprenticeship or fleet maintenance roles. No formal professional registration body is required for this role, but holding a full Irish driving licence and familiarity with health and safety standards, including the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) procedures, is expected by most employers.
Most Vehicle Maintenance Attendants start with on-the-job training in a fleet depot, fast-fit centre, or bus and coach operator, gaining familiarity with a wide range of vehicles. With experience, you may progress into a more senior operative role with responsibility for training new starters or managing stock of consumables such as oils and filters. Completing a SOLAS Motor Mechanic apprenticeship while in employment is a common route to becoming a fully qualified motor mechanic or fleet technician, significantly increasing your earning potential and job options. Experienced and qualified individuals may move into roles such as Fleet Supervisor, Workshop Foreman, or Fleet Manager with transport operators, local authorities, or large logistics companies.
AI and digital diagnostics tools are increasingly being used in vehicle workshops to analyse engine data and flag potential faults, meaning attendants who can read and act on digital reports will be more valuable. However, the hands-on, physical nature of routine servicing tasks means that full automation of this role is unlikely in the near term. AI-powered scheduling and fleet management software is already changing how maintenance tasks are planned and recorded, so basic digital literacy is becoming more important even at entry level. Overall, AI is more likely to assist and guide Vehicle Maintenance Attendants rather than replace them, particularly as fleets become more complex with electric and hybrid drivetrains.
