What will you learn?

This apprenticeship trains you to inspect, diagnose, maintain and repair heavy commercial vehicles including trucks, trailers, buses, and plant machinery. You develop expertise in diesel engines, air brake systems, hydraulics, electrical and electronic systems, and emission control technologies. Much of your learning takes place on the job in a registered employer's workshop, with off-the-job training delivered in block-release phases at an Education and Training Board (ETB) centre. A typical week involves hands-on fault diagnosis, preventive maintenance schedules, and working with modern diagnostic software alongside experienced mechanics. You will also gain familiarity with Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Testing (CVRT) standards and fleet workshop practices.

Required Education

Entry requires you to have a registered employer who will take you on as an apprentice; SOLAS registers the apprenticeship through apprenticeship.ie. Most employers expect you to have completed the Leaving Certificate or a QQI Level 5 qualification, and a background in subjects such as Engineering, Technical Graphics, Applied Maths or Physics is useful. A genuine interest in mechanics and some practical experience — even voluntary — strengthens your application considerably. There is no CAO points process; entry is employer-led, so you apply directly to fleet operators, haulage companies, bus operators or dealerships. Mature applicants (over 23) and those with relevant trade experience may also be considered at the employer's discretion.

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified heavy vehicle mechanics in Ireland is strong and consistent, driven by the size of the national haulage fleet, ongoing investment in public transport, and the rollout of electric and hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles. Graduates typically move quickly into full-time employment, and experienced technicians are actively recruited by fleet operators who often struggle to fill vacancies. With experience, you can progress to workshop foreman, fleet manager, or technical trainer roles. Self-employment as a mobile heavy vehicle technician is also a realistic option, with gross salaries for experienced technicians typically ranging from €40,000 to €60,000 per year.

Impact of AI on this program

AI-driven diagnostic tools are already changing how heavy vehicle technicians identify faults, with onboard telematics and predictive maintenance software reducing time spent on manual checks. You will be expected to interpret data from vehicle management systems and electronic diagnostic platforms as a routine part of the job. However, the physical nature of heavy vehicle repair — working with large components, high-pressure systems, and complex machinery — means that human skill and judgement remain essential. AI is more likely to enhance your efficiency than replace your role.

How to apply

This is an employer-led apprenticeship registered with SOLAS; applicants must first secure a contract with an approved employer (e.g. a haulage company, bus operator or plant hire firm), after which off-the-job training is delivered at a designated ETB training centre. Minimum entry requirements are typically a QQI Level 4 qualification or equivalent, and applicants must be at least 16 years of age.
