Outlook
Growing
This apprenticeship trains you to inspect, service, and repair commercial and general aviation aircraft to the highest safety standards. You will study aircraft systems including avionics, hydraulics, pneumatics, engines, and airframes, combining classroom theory with hands-on workshop practice at an approved Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility. A typical week involves working alongside licensed engineers on the hangar floor, attending off-the-job training blocks at a training centre, and building a logbook of competencies. Specialisms include avionics, mechanical systems, and line maintenance. The programme leads to the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Part-66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence, which is recognised across Europe and beyond.

Air Corps Apprentice Aircraft Technician
Entry is through the Generation Apprenticeship programme coordinated by SOLAS, and you must be recruited by an approved employer such as Aer Lingus, Ryanair, Dublin Aerospace, or another EASA-approved MRO organisation. A Leaving Certificate is required, with passes in Maths, English, and a science subject (Physics or Physics & Chemistry at Ordinary level at minimum, with Higher level strongly preferred by employers). Relevant QQI Level 5 qualifications in Engineering or Aircraft Technology can strengthen your application and some providers accept these as an alternative entry route. Mature applicants over 23 may apply directly to employers and will be assessed on relevant technical experience. There are no CAO points involved; selection is competitive and employer-driven, often including aptitude tests and interviews.
Demand for qualified AMEs in Ireland and across Europe is strong and is projected to grow as the aviation sector continues to expand following post-pandemic recovery. The EASA Part-66 licence makes Irish-trained engineers highly mobile and sought after internationally. Experienced engineers who progress to Category B licensing and type ratings command very competitive salaries, with senior engineers earning €55,000–€80,000 or more. The specialist nature of the qualification means unemployment among qualified AMEs remains low.
AI and digital tools are increasingly used in predictive maintenance, where algorithms analyse sensor data to identify component wear before failures occur, reducing aircraft downtime. You will be expected to work with electronic technical manuals, digital inspection systems, and data-driven maintenance management platforms. While AI assists diagnosis and scheduling, the hands-on, safety-critical nature of aircraft maintenance means the qualified engineer's judgement and physical inspection skills remain essential and are not replaceable by automation. Staying current with digital maintenance systems will be an ongoing part of your professional development.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
How to apply
This is an employer-led apprenticeship registered with SOLAS; applicants must first secure a contract with an approved aviation employer (such as an MRO or airline), after which SOLAS registers the apprenticeship and the ETB/TU provides off-the-job training phases. There is no CAO application; apply directly to participating employers via generationapprenticeship.ie or the employer's own recruitment channels.
