What will you learn?

This apprenticeship trains you to inspect, diagnose, maintain and repair agricultural machinery — from tractors and combine harvesters to precision-farming equipment and GPS-guided systems. You combine on-the-job learning at an approved employer (typically a machinery dealership or agricultural contractor) with off-the-job training phases at a designated training centre. A typical week involves hands-on workshop tasks such as servicing engines, hydraulic systems and electrical circuits, supported by technical theory classes covering mechanical principles and equipment diagnostics. You may also gain exposure to precision-agriculture technologies, including telematics and automated steering systems. The programme generally runs over four years, blending earn-and-learn experience with structured assessments towards your NFQ Level 6 Advanced Certificate.

Required Education

To enter this apprenticeship you must first secure a contract with a SOLAS-registered employer, typically a machinery dealer, agri-contractor or farm equipment supplier. Most employers expect you to have completed the Leaving Certificate or equivalent; useful subjects include Agricultural Science, Engineering, Physics and Mathematics. A full or provisional Category B driving licence is commonly required, and some employers prefer candidates with a background in farming or mechanical hobbies. There are no CAO points involved — selection is entirely employer-led. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) and those with a QQI Level 5 Engineering or Agricultural qualification can also apply, as prior learning may be recognised. You must meet health and safety fitness requirements to work in a workshop environment.

Career Prospects

Demand for skilled agricultural mechanics in Ireland is strong, driven by the increasing complexity of modern farming equipment and the adoption of precision-agriculture technologies. The agri-machinery workforce is ageing, creating real recruitment pressure for qualified technicians across Leinster, Munster and Connacht. Qualified apprentices are frequently offered permanent roles by their training employer upon completion. Gross starting salaries typically range from €30,000 to €38,000, rising to €45,000 or more for experienced senior technicians and field service engineers.

Impact of AI on this program

AI and digital technologies are transforming agricultural machinery, with telematics, machine-learning diagnostics and autonomous vehicle systems becoming standard features on modern equipment. As a technician, you will increasingly use manufacturer diagnostic software and tablet-based tools that incorporate AI-driven fault-finding to identify issues more quickly. Remote monitoring platforms allow some faults to be diagnosed before a machine breaks down, changing the nature of service calls. These technologies make the role more technically demanding but also more varied, so strong digital literacy alongside mechanical skill will be increasingly valued by employers.
