Retail & Customer Service
As a Forecourt Retail Assistant you work in a service station shop and deli, helping customers with purchases, preparing food at the deli counter, and keeping the shop floor clean and well-stocked. You operate the till, process cash and card payments, handle refunds, and assist customers in finding products or learning about current promotions. Part of your role involves restocking shelves, rotating stock, checking expiry dates, and ensuring merchandise displays look presentable at all times. You work closely with colleagues and supervisors, often as part of a small shift team that covers early mornings, evenings, and weekends. Fuel safety awareness is an important aspect of working on a forecourt, and you are expected to follow health and safety procedures at all times.
Listen: a day as a Forecourt Retail Assistant
Your alarm goes off at 5:45 a.m. for a six o'clock start. You cycle or get a lift to the service station, sign in on the rota sheet in the back office, and pull on your branded polo shirt and name badge. The night-shift colleague gives you a quick handover — the deli fridges needed a temperature check overnight and one of the coffee machines needs a fresh milk load before the morning rush hits. By half six the forecourt is already busy with commuters filling up. You unlock the deli counter, switch on the hot-food unit, and begin cooking sausages, rashers and pudding for the breakfast rolls. You follow the food safety records sheet, logging cooking temperatures with a probe thermometer and initialling the HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) chart clipped to the wall — this is a legal requirement in Ireland for any food business.
No specific Leaving Certificate subjects are required to enter this role, although English and Maths at Junior Cycle level are useful for handling transactions and communicating with customers. Many employers hire school leavers or students on a part-time basis with on-the-job training provided from day one. A QQI Level 5 award in Retail Practice or Customer Service, available through PLC courses at Colleges of Further Education, can strengthen your prospects and may lead to supervisory opportunities more quickly. Food hygiene and safety certificates, such as a HACCP awareness qualification, are often required or provided by employers for deli work. There is no statutory professional registration body for this role, but completing short courses in manual handling, fire safety, and fuel forecourt safety is common practice in Ireland.
Many people begin as part-time Forecourt Retail Assistants while still in secondary school or college, gaining their first experience of the workplace. With experience and reliability, you can move into a senior sales assistant or team leader role, taking on responsibility for opening or closing shifts and supervising junior staff. From there, progression to Forecourt Supervisor or Assistant Manager is common, particularly within larger service station networks such as Circle K, Applegreen, or Topaz-branded forecourts. Further study through a QQI Level 5 or 6 programme in retail management or business can open the door to store management positions.
AI is beginning to influence forecourt retail through self-checkout terminals and automated stock-monitoring systems, which may reduce the need for some routine tasks. However, the customer-facing, food preparation, and safety-monitoring aspects of this role are difficult to fully automate in the short term. AI-driven loyalty programme tools and smart ordering systems are increasingly used by large forecourt operators to manage stock more efficiently, changing how assistants interact with inventory management. Overall, the role is evolving rather than disappearing, with more emphasis placed on customer service and deli skills as automated systems handle basic transactions.
