Entry to this QQI Level 5 PLC is generally open to applicants who have completed the Junior Certificate or equivalent, though having a Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied is an advantage. There are no strict subject requirements, but experience in customer-facing roles or subjects such as Home Economics or Business at Junior or Senior Cycle can be helpful. No minimum CAO points apply, as places are allocated directly by the college; applicants typically apply through the college or via a local ETB. School leavers, mature students, and those returning to education are all welcome to apply. HEAR and DARE access schemes may be available depending on the provider. Some colleges require a brief interview or a statement of interest as part of the selection process.
Ireland's hospitality sector continues to face strong demand for skilled, qualified front-of-house staff, particularly as the industry recovered and expanded following recent years of labour shortages. Holding a QQI Level 5 award distinguishes you from unqualified applicants and opens doors to supervisory progression more quickly. Salaries for bar and restaurant supervisors in Ireland typically range from around €28,000 to €38,000 gross per year, with experienced managers earning more. The sector also offers flexible working patterns that suit a variety of lifestyles.
AI is beginning to influence hospitality through tools such as automated reservation and ordering systems, AI-driven stock management software, and customer feedback analytics. However, the core of bar and restaurant work relies on human interaction, physical service skills, and on-the-spot judgement, which AI cannot readily replace. As a student, you may encounter AI-assisted scheduling or inventory tools during your training, and familiarity with these is increasingly useful. The personal, social nature of hospitality means that skilled people remain central to quality service.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
