As an Industrial Maintenance Fitter you are responsible for keeping the machinery and equipment in manufacturing facilities running safely and efficiently. Your day-to-day work involves carrying out routine inspections, diagnosing faults, replacing worn parts, and performing both planned preventative maintenance and emergency repairs on industrial machinery. You work closely with production teams, engineers, and health and safety officers to minimise downtime and ensure equipment meets regulatory and quality standards. Industrial Maintenance Fitters are commonly found in pharmaceutical plants, food and beverage facilities, medical device manufacturers, and other large-scale production environments across Ireland.
Listen: a day as an Industrial Maintenance Fitter
Your alarm goes off at 5:45 a.m. You are on the early shift at a large pharmaceutical manufacturing plant outside Limerick city, and you need to be on the floor by 6:30 a.m. After signing in and collecting your personal protective equipment — safety boots, hard hat, high-vis vest and safety glasses — you head straight to the maintenance office for the shift handover. The night-shift fitter runs through the log: one conveyor belt on Line 3 was running rough all night and a compressed-air valve on the filling line is showing a slow leak. These are your priorities before production ramps up. By 7:00 a.m. you are at Line 3 with your toolbox. You isolate the conveyor using the lockout-tagout procedure — a critical safety step that locks the machine's energy sources so nobody can accidentally start it while your hands are inside. You remove the side guard, inspect the drive chain and discover a worn sprocket. You log the fault on the plant's computerised maintenance management system, known as CMMS, grab the correct replacement sprocket from the parts store, and fit it. The whole job takes about forty minutes.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
A strong Leaving Certificate with subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, and Technical Drawing provides a solid foundation for entry into this career. The most direct Irish route is the Mechanical Automation and Maintenance Fitting (MAMF) apprenticeship, registered with SOLAS and delivered on an earn-and-learn basis through employers and Education and Training Boards (ETBs), leading to an NFQ Level 6 Advanced Certificate. Some entrants first complete a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC course in Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering at a College of Further Education before seeking apprenticeship or employment. Graduates of NFQ Level 7 or Level 8 programmes in Mechanical Engineering from technological universities such as TU Dublin, MTU, ATU, or TUS may also move into maintenance engineering roles at a more senior level. No statutory professional registration body governs this trade, though membership of Engineers Ireland is open to those who progress academically.
Most Industrial Maintenance Fitters begin their careers through the MAMF apprenticeship or a traineeship, working under the supervision of experienced fitters in a manufacturing plant. After completing their apprenticeship and gaining several years of hands-on experience, they typically advance to a Senior Maintenance Fitter or Multi-Skilled Technician role with greater autonomy and responsibility. Further progression can lead to positions such as Maintenance Supervisor, Maintenance Engineer, or Engineering Team Lead, particularly for those who supplement their trade qualification with a part-time NFQ Level 7 or Level 8 degree. In larger multinational companies, particularly in the pharmaceutical and medical device sectors, experienced fitters can move into roles such as Reliability Engineer, Continuous Improvement Technician, or Engineering Manager.
Artificial intelligence and predictive maintenance technologies are transforming how Industrial Maintenance Fitters approach their work, with sensors and AI-driven software increasingly flagging potential equipment failures before they occur. This shifts some of the focus from reactive repair work towards interpreting data, managing condition-monitoring systems, and planning maintenance interventions more precisely. Fitters who develop skills in reading diagnostic dashboards, understanding automation systems, and working alongside programmable logic controllers (PLCs) will be better positioned as plants become smarter. Overall, AI is expected to enhance the role rather than replace it, as hands-on mechanical skill and physical intervention remain essential in maintaining complex industrial machinery.
