What will you learn?

This programme gives you a thorough grounding in how mechanical systems are designed, built, and maintained, alongside the processes used to manufacture components at scale. You will study topics such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science, CAD/CAM, and quality control, with a strong emphasis on hands-on laboratory and workshop sessions. Many programmes include a dedicated industry placement semester, giving you real experience in manufacturing plants, medical-device companies, or engineering firms. In the west and south of Ireland, there is a particular focus on precision engineering and med-tech, reflecting the strong industry cluster in those regions. A typical week involves lectures, computer-aided design tutorials, and time in the engineering workshop or lab.

Required Education

Entry is typically through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate that includes Maths and a science subject; Higher Level Maths is strongly recommended and may be required by some institutions. English and Irish at Ordinary Level or above are standard minimum requirements. CAO points for Level 7 programmes in this field are generally moderate compared to Level 8 degrees. QQI Level 5 or 6 awards in Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related FET discipline provide a well-established progression route into second year on some programmes. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly through the CAO mature-student route, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are available for eligible applicants.

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified mechanical and manufacturing engineers remains strong in Ireland, driven by continued investment from multinational medical device and pharmaceutical companies. Level 7 graduates are valued for their practical, industry-ready skills and often step into technologist or junior engineer roles quickly after graduation. Many employers actively recruit from placement cohorts, meaning strong placement performance can lead directly to a job offer. There is also a clear pathway to upskill through Level 8 and Level 9 programmes if you wish to take on more senior engineering roles.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in manufacturing environments through predictive maintenance systems, automated quality inspection using machine vision, and AI-driven process optimisation. As a graduate engineer you will be expected to work alongside these technologies and interpret the data they produce rather than be replaced by them. Understanding how AI tools interface with CNC machinery, robotics, and sensor networks will become a routine part of the engineering technologist role. Programmes are beginning to incorporate digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0 modules to reflect this shift.

How to apply

Full-time undergraduate BEng programmes are applied for through the CAO (cao.ie) with a closing date of 1 February each year; entry is based on Leaving Certificate points and typically requires Mathematics and a science or technical subject at defined grades. Some providers also offer part-time or ab-initio routes with direct applications to the institution.
