Management & Leadership
As a Quality Manager you own and operate the quality management system within a manufacturing or production organisation, ensuring that products meet both internal standards and external regulatory requirements. You plan and conduct audits, analyse non-conformances, and drive corrective and preventive action plans across departments. Day-to-day you liaise closely with production supervisors, supply chain teams, regulatory bodies, and customers to resolve quality issues and communicate technical findings clearly. In sectors such as leather goods, medical devices, food, or pharmaceuticals you ensure compliance with frameworks such as ISO 9001, GMP, or sector-specific Irish and EU regulations. Continuous improvement is central to your role, and you lead initiatives that reduce waste, improve processes, and raise customer satisfaction.
Listen: a day as a Quality Manager
Your alarm goes off at 6:45 a.m. and you are on the factory floor by 8:00 a.m., steel-toe boots on, clipboard in hand. Before the morning shift briefing you do a quick walk of the production line, checking that batch records are filled in correctly, that calibrated gauges show the right readings, and that nothing from last night's run is waiting to cause a problem. You notice a label applied at an angle on three finished units and flag it immediately with the line supervisor. By 9:00 a.m. you are at your desk opening the quality management system on screen. You work through the non-conformance reports that came in overnight, assigning each one a root-cause investigation and a deadline for corrective action. Two relate to a supplier sending components slightly outside the agreed dimensional tolerance. You draft a formal Supplier Corrective Action Request and send it before the morning is out.

Career advice on becoming a senior quality manager
icould career stories
Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree is the typical minimum entry point for this role; relevant subjects include Quality Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Science, or Business. Helpful Leaving Certificate subjects include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Business Studies, as these underpin technical and analytical thinking. Many Quality Managers in Ireland hold a Level 9 postgraduate qualification such as an MSc in Quality Management, Lean Systems, or Engineering Management, often taken while working. Institutions such as TU Dublin, UL, UCC, and ATU offer programmes in quality, engineering, and science that are well regarded by Irish employers. Professional membership with bodies such as the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI) or Engineers Ireland strengthens career prospects and demonstrates commitment to best practice.
Many Quality Managers begin their careers as Quality Technicians or Quality Engineers, building hands-on experience in inspection, testing, and audit processes before progressing to supervisory and management roles. In Ireland, multinational manufacturers in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, food, and technology sectors offer well-defined progression paths from engineer to quality manager to senior quality manager. Achieving certifications such as Certified Manager of Quality (ASQ), Lead Auditor status (ISO 9001), or a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt significantly accelerates advancement. With extensive experience, Quality Managers can move into Director of Quality, Head of Regulatory Affairs, or Operations Director positions.
Artificial intelligence is beginning to transform quality management by automating routine inspection tasks, analysing large volumes of production data in real time, and flagging anomalies far more quickly than manual review allows. AI-powered vision systems can detect product defects with high accuracy, reducing reliance on manual inspection lines. However, the strategic, regulatory, and interpersonal dimensions of the Quality Manager role — such as audit management, supplier negotiation, and regulatory submissions — remain firmly human responsibilities. Quality Managers who develop competence in interpreting AI-generated insights and integrating them into quality systems will be at a significant advantage.
