What does a Make-Up and Hair Designer do?

As a Make-Up and Hair Designer you develop the overall creative vision for the hair, make-up and wigs of performers in film, television, theatre and live events. You research historical periods, cultural contexts and artistic concepts to build detailed design briefs, sketches and mood boards that align with the director's and production designer's vision. Day to day you collaborate closely with artistic directors, costume designers, directors of photography and the wider creative team to ensure your designs are consistent with the production's look. You oversee and supervise a team of make-up artists and hair stylists during rehearsals and shoots, updating your designs as the production evolves. In some contexts you may also work as an independent artist, creating make-up art for editorial, commercial or gallery purposes.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Make-Up and Hair Designer

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 5:30 a.m. because the unit call time on set is 7:00 a.m. You are working on a mid-budget Irish drama series filming on location in a converted warehouse on the outskirts of Dublin. Before leaving home you check your kit bag: foundations, colour-mixing palettes, prosthetic adhesives, setting sprays, and a full range of wig pins and lace adhesives. You also re-read your design continuity bible — the detailed document you built during pre-production that records every character's approved look, from skin tone and beard stubble length to hairline position on each wig. You arrive at the make-up and hair truck by 6:45 a.m. and brief your team of three make-up artists and two hair stylists on the day's shooting schedule. You check which scenes are being shot, cross-reference your continuity photographs from the previous shoot day, and assign each artist their lead actors. One performer is in period-accurate 1920s waves and a hand-knotted lace-front wig you commissioned from a specialist supplier; fitting that correctly and checking the colour blend at the hairline takes forty minutes alone.

Filmed in the UK

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.

Required Education

There is no single mandatory qualification, but most Make-Up and Hair Designers in Ireland build their skills through specialist courses at institutions such as IADT (Dún Laoghaire) or through QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC programmes in make-up artistry offered by Colleges of Further Education across the country. Useful Leaving Certificate subjects include Art, Design & Communication Graphics, and Biology, while strong results that allow access to creative arts programmes are beneficial. Some practitioners progress to Level 7 or Level 8 degree programmes in Theatre Design, Film & Television Production, or Performing Arts at institutions such as TU Dublin, IADT or University of Galway. Private specialist academies offering recognised diplomas in make-up artistry for film, TV and theatre are a common and well-regarded alternative route into the industry. There is no statutory registration body for this occupation in Ireland, though professional membership of industry networks and a strong portfolio are essential for career development.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Make-Up and Hair Designers begin their careers as make-up artists or hair stylists on student films, local theatre productions or corporate events, building a professional portfolio and industry contacts. With experience, you may progress to Head of Make-Up and Hair on larger productions, taking on supervisory and budgetary responsibility for a department. Working consistently with reputable Irish production companies, broadcasters such as RTÉ, TG4 or streaming platforms commissioning Irish content can open opportunities to design for high-profile film and television projects. Experienced designers often combine regular production work with teaching on specialist courses or running their own studio or agency.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered virtual try-on tools and digital previsualization software are increasingly used in pre-production, allowing designers to test make-up concepts on performers digitally before committing to a look on set. Generative AI tools can assist with mood board creation and reference gathering, speeding up the early research phase of a project. However, the hands-on craft of applying make-up and wigs, reading a performer's face and adapting designs in real time remains beyond current AI capability. Make-Up and Hair Designers who embrace these digital tools to enhance their workflow are likely to be more competitive, while the core creative and technical skills of the role remain distinctly human.
