What will you learn?

This course gives you hands-on training in both nail technology and make-up artistry, covering gel and acrylic nail application, nail art, skin preparation, and a full range of make-up techniques from everyday looks to bridal and editorial work. You spend the majority of your week in a salon-style training environment practising on fellow students and supervised clients, building speed, hygiene standards, and professional presentation. As the course progresses you develop specialisms such as shellac and gel overlays, nail extensions, airbrush make-up, and special-effects work. Theory modules cover anatomy of the skin and nail, product chemistry, health and safety legislation, and running a small beauty business. Some colleges incorporate a work placement period in a local salon, beauty counter, or bridal studio, giving you real commercial experience before you graduate.

Required Education

Entry to this QQI Level 5 programme typically requires a Leaving Certificate or Junior Cycle results demonstrating basic literacy and numeracy, though there is no set minimum grade requirement at most ETB colleges. No specific Higher-level subjects are required, and science or biology at any level is a useful background. Applicants who have not completed the Leaving Certificate may apply as mature students (usually aged 21 or over) and are assessed on relevant experience or a short interview. Some colleges accept Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) graduates directly. If you have completed a related QQI Level 4 award in Beauty or Personal Care, this can support your application. HEAR and DARE access routes are available at participating ETB colleges for students with socioeconomic or disability needs.

Career Prospects

Demand for skilled nail technicians and make-up artists in Ireland remains steady, driven by a strong bridal industry, growing content-creator culture, and consistent footfall in beauty salons. Self-employment and mobile work offer flexible income streams, and experienced practitioners with a loyal client base can build a sustainable business relatively quickly. Starting salaries on beauty counters or in salons typically range from approximately €24,000 to €28,000 gross per year, while established freelance artists working bridal seasons can earn considerably more. Opportunities to progress into salon management or brand education roles increase with experience.

Impact of AI on this program

AI has a limited but emerging role in this field; virtual try-on tools powered by augmented reality allow clients to preview nail colours and make-up looks via apps before booking, which affects how salons market their services. Some product brands use AI-driven skin-tone matching to recommend foundations and nail shades, and you will need to understand these tools as part of your client consultation process. The hands-on, tactile nature of nail technology and make-up application means that human skill and artistry remain central and cannot be automated. Keeping up with digital platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, where AI-assisted editing features are common, is increasingly part of building a freelance client base.
