Outlook

This course prepares you to become a qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in Ireland, licensed by the Road Safety Authority (RSA). You study road traffic legislation, advanced driving techniques, risk perception, and the psychology of learning as it applies to teaching novice drivers. A significant part of your training involves developing instructional skills — how to explain, demonstrate, and correct driving behaviours safely and effectively. Practical in-car coaching sessions form the backbone of the programme, alongside classroom modules on lesson planning and pupil management. You will also prepare for the RSA's three-part qualification process: a theory test, a driving ability test, and an instructional ability test carried out in a real teaching scenario.
Entry to ADI training programmes at FET level typically requires a minimum Leaving Certificate or equivalent, though mature applicants without formal qualifications are commonly accepted based on relevant experience. You must hold a full, clean Irish driving licence (category B) for at least two years prior to applying for RSA ADI registration. No specific Leaving Certificate subjects are mandatory, though English literacy is important for the theory and legislation components. QQI Level 5 modules in Education and Training Support or Road Passenger Transport can complement ADI preparation. Applicants already working in driver education or transport may enter with Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The RSA itself sets the ultimate registration standards, so meeting their eligibility criteria is as important as the course entry requirements.
Demand for ADIs in Ireland remains steady, supported by the mandatory twelve-lesson EDT system that all learner drivers must complete before their driving test. Waiting lists for driving lessons remain long in many parts of the country, meaning newly qualified instructors can typically build a client base relatively quickly. Self-employment offers flexibility but also income variability, particularly in rural areas or during economic downturns. Those who build strong local reputations or diversify into fleet and commercial training generally achieve greater income stability.
AI-powered driving simulators and hazard perception software are increasingly used in driver training, and as an ADI you may incorporate these tools into lessons to supplement in-car instruction. RSA theory test preparation is already supported by digital platforms, reducing some traditional classroom delivery. However, the core of ADI work — real-time in-car coaching and human judgement in live traffic — cannot be replicated by AI, keeping the role inherently practical and person-centred. Staying current with emerging vehicle technologies, including ADAS features and electric vehicles, will become an increasingly important part of an ADI's professional knowledge.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
How to apply
There is no CAO route for ADI qualification. Candidates apply directly to ETBs or private RSA-recognised training providers for preparatory courses, then must pass the RSA's own three-part ADI qualifying examination (theory test, driving ability test, and instructional ability test) before registering with the RSA as an Approved Driving Instructor. Applicants must hold a full Irish/EU driving licence for at least four years before applying.
