What will you learn?

This QQI Level 6 programme introduces you to the science and practical skills behind farming fish, shellfish and other aquatic organisms in Ireland's coastal and freshwater environments. You will study water quality management, marine biology, fish health and disease, and the feeding and husbandry of species such as Atlantic salmon, Pacific oysters and mussels. Much of your learning takes place on or near the water, with hands-on placements at working fish farms, hatcheries and shellfish operations — particularly along the west and south coasts where Ireland's industry is concentrated. A typical week combines classroom sessions in aquatic science and legislation with practical site visits, water-quality testing and equipment maintenance, giving you direct experience of a commercial aquaculture operation.

Required Education

Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate with passes in five subjects, including English and at least one science or agricultural subject, though individual colleges may vary their minimum requirements. Biology, Agricultural Science and Geography are particularly useful subjects for this course. School leavers without a full Leaving Certificate may be considered on the basis of relevant work experience, particularly if they have a background in fishing, farming or outdoor environments. QQI Level 5 awards in Agriculture, Horticulture or Environmental Science can also provide a strong entry pathway. Mature applicants aged 23 or over are regularly considered, and HEAR or DARE access routes may be available through participating ETBs. Some colleges require an interview or a portfolio of relevant experience as part of the admissions process.

Career Prospects

Demand for skilled aquaculture technicians in Ireland remains steady, supported by government growth targets for the seafood sector and ongoing BIM investment in training and industry development. Ireland's long coastline and clean Atlantic waters give the sector a competitive advantage, particularly for premium shellfish exports to European markets. Many employers actively recruit QQI Level 6 graduates directly into technical and supervisory roles, especially in the west of Ireland. Seasonal variability exists in some shellfish operations, but full-time year-round positions are common in larger salmon and hatchery facilities.

Impact of AI on this program

AI and sensor technology are increasingly being used in aquaculture for automated water-quality monitoring, feed optimisation and early disease detection, meaning graduates who understand these tools will be more competitive. Remote monitoring systems now allow fish farm managers to track tank conditions in real time, reducing manual workload and improving fish welfare outcomes. However, the physically demanding, site-specific nature of aquaculture means that hands-on technical skills remain essential and are not easily replaced by automation. Learning to interpret data from digital monitoring platforms is becoming a practical expectation in the industry.

How to apply

QQI Level 6 Aquaculture programmes are FET/PLC courses delivered through ETBs and Further Education colleges; applicants apply directly to the relevant ETB or college, not through the CAO. Entry typically requires Leaving Certificate or equivalent, and some providers may request relevant work or voluntary experience in a marine or agricultural context.
