As a Mechanical Engineering Technician you provide essential technical support to mechanical engineers in the design, testing, and maintenance of machinery and mechanical systems. Your day-to-day work involves reading and interpreting engineering drawings, developing layouts, adjusting designs, and carrying out tests on mechanical components and equipment. You collect and analyse test data, write technical reports, and liaise closely with engineers and production teams to ensure machinery operates safely and efficiently. You may work across a range of settings including manufacturing plants, pharmaceutical facilities, or engineering consultancies, depending on your employer.
Listen: a day as a Mechanical Engineering Technician
You arrive at the manufacturing plant in Limerick at 7:45 a.m., sign in at the security desk, and pull on your PPE — safety boots, hi-vis vest and safety glasses — before heading to the morning briefing at 8:00 a.m. The shift supervisor runs through the day's priorities on the whiteboard: a conveyor belt assembly needs a tolerance check, and a pump unit flagged during yesterday's run has to be inspected before production resumes. By 8:30 a.m. you are at your workstation reviewing the engineering drawings on the CAD system. You check the dimensions specified for the conveyor belt brackets against the as-built components using a vernier calliper and a micrometer, logging every measurement into a spreadsheet. One bracket is 0.3 mm outside the permitted tolerance, so you flag it to the senior mechanical engineer and await a decision on whether it can be accepted or must be reworked.

icould career stories
Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
A strong Leaving Certificate with subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, and Technical Graphics will give you a solid foundation for this career. The most common entry route is a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, offered at Institutes of Technology and Technological Universities such as TU Dublin, ATU, or SETU. Many employers also welcome graduates of Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor programmes in Mechanical Engineering from technological universities, which offer broader theoretical grounding. Apprenticeship pathways in related trades such as fitting or instrumentation, offered through SOLAS, can also provide a practical route into technician roles. Engineers Ireland offers membership and continuing professional development opportunities that can support your career progression as you gain experience.
Most Mechanical Engineering Technicians begin in a junior or assistant technician role, supporting qualified engineers with testing, documentation, and design tasks. With experience and possibly further education at NFQ Level 7 or 8, you can progress to a senior technician or lead technician position with greater responsibility for projects and team coordination. Some technicians move into roles such as project engineer, maintenance engineer, or quality engineer, particularly in the pharmaceutical or manufacturing sectors. Membership of Engineers Ireland and continued professional development can support your advancement into more senior engineering or management positions over time.
Artificial intelligence and advanced simulation tools are increasingly being integrated into mechanical engineering workflows, automating elements of data analysis, fault diagnosis, and design optimisation that technicians previously carried out manually. As a Mechanical Engineering Technician, you will be expected to work alongside AI-assisted CAE platforms and predictive maintenance systems rather than replace them. These tools can improve the accuracy of test data interpretation and speed up design iteration, freeing technicians to focus on more complex problem-solving and hands-on tasks. Upskilling in digital engineering tools and data literacy will be increasingly important to remain competitive in this evolving landscape.
