What does an Optometrist do?

As an optometrist you examine patients' eyes to assess vision, detect abnormalities and identify signs of eye disease or systemic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. You prescribe and fit corrective lenses — spectacles and contact lenses — and provide advice on eye care, visual problems and suitable products. You work with patients of all ages, from young children having their first sight test to older adults managing age-related conditions such as glaucoma or macular degeneration. You collaborate with ophthalmologists, GPs and other healthcare professionals, referring patients for further investigation or treatment when required. Optometrists practise in high-street optical practices, HSE community clinics, hospital eye departments and specialist vision rehabilitation settings.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an Optometrist

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the optical practice on the main street at 8.45 am, fifteen minutes before the first patient. You check the appointment schedule on the practice management system — twelve patients booked today, ranging from a six-year-old having her first sight test to a retired man coming in for his annual glaucoma monitoring check. You make sure the consulting room is clean and that all the equipment is calibrated: the slit lamp, the auto-refractor, the visual field analyser, and the tonometer used to measure pressure inside the eye. Your first patient is that six-year-old. Getting accurate readings from a young child takes patience; she is fidgety and a little nervous. You use a retinoscope to assess her prescription without relying on her to read letters, and you chat to her mum throughout. You spot a small difference in refraction between the two eyes — a common condition called amblyopia risk — and you explain clearly what this means and that glasses should address it early.

Filmed in the UK

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.

Required Education

A recognised degree in optometry is the standard entry route; in Ireland this is typically the BSc in Optometry (NFQ Level 8) offered at Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin). Leaving Certificate subjects that strengthen your application include Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, usually at Higher Level. Following graduation you must complete a supervised pre-registration clinical placement before applying for registration with CORU (the Health and Social Care Professionals Council), which is the statutory regulator for optometrists in Ireland. Without CORU registration you cannot legally practise as an optometrist in Ireland. Continuing professional development (CPD) is required throughout your career to maintain registration and keep up to date with clinical advances.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most newly qualified optometrists begin their careers in high-street optical retail practices such as Specsavers, Vision Express or independent practices, often initially as pre-registration optometrists completing their clinical hours. After gaining CORU registration you may progress to a senior or lead optometrist role, take on practice management responsibilities or develop a specialist interest in areas such as paediatric optometry, contact lens fitting or low vision rehabilitation. Some optometrists move into hospital eye departments or community HSE services, while others pursue postgraduate qualifications (NFQ Level 9) in areas such as ocular therapeutics, which in Ireland allows certain optometrists to prescribe medications. Experienced professionals may also move into education, clinical research or practice ownership.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered diagnostic tools are increasingly used to analyse retinal images and OCT scans, supporting optometrists in detecting conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma at an earlier stage. These tools act as a clinical aid rather than a replacement, allowing you to see more patients efficiently and improve diagnostic accuracy. AI is also being introduced in refractive assessment and contact lens fitting software, streamlining routine elements of the consultation. The human skills of patient communication, clinical judgement and ethical decision-making remain essential and are not replicated by current AI systems.
