What will you learn?

This programme trains you to fit, dispense, and advise patients on spectacles, contact lenses, and low-vision aids. You study the anatomy of the eye, optics, lens technology, and frame fitting, alongside clinical communication and patient care. Practical skills are central to the course, with optical retail and clinical placements forming a significant part of your training from an early stage. A typical week combines lectures in optics and anatomy with hands-on dispensing workshops and time in supervised practice settings. You also explore specialist areas such as paediatric dispensing, contact lens fitting, and low-vision rehabilitation. Graduates are equipped to work independently as qualified dispensing opticians registered with CORU.

Required Education

Entry is typically through the CAO system, requiring a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects including English and Maths. Higher-level science subjects such as Biology or Physics are strongly advantageous given the scientific content of the programme. CAO points for this programme are generally moderate to high and competition can vary year to year. Applicants may also enter through a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET award in Science or Health Studies, subject to TU Dublin's specific QQI progression requirements. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly to TU Dublin and may be interviewed or assessed. HEAR and DARE schemes are available for eligible applicants from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.

Career Prospects

Demand for dispensing opticians in Ireland is steady, supported by an ageing population and growing awareness of eye health. Graduates generally find employment relatively quickly given the practical, regulated nature of the qualification. CORU registration is required to practise, which provides a clear professional pathway and employment protection. Salaries for newly qualified dispensing opticians typically range from around €28,000 to €35,000 gross per annum, rising with experience and management responsibility.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is beginning to influence optical dispensing through automated refraction tools, AI-assisted frame selection software, and digital measurement systems that improve dispensing accuracy. These technologies are being adopted in larger optical retail settings in Ireland and are likely to become more widespread. However, the hands-on, patient-facing nature of dispensing means that clinical judgment, communication, and manual fitting skills remain central to the role. Graduates who understand and can work alongside these technologies will be well placed in a changing optical environment.

How to apply

Ophthalmic Dispensing at bachelor level in Ireland is applied for through the CAO (cao.ie) for the TU Dublin programme; this is a highly specialised field and TU Dublin is the primary provider of this qualification at degree level in Ireland. Some routes into ophthalmic dispensing also exist via the FBDO-affiliated apprenticeship pathway through employer-based training, applied for directly through a registered optical practice and the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO), which is recognised in Ireland.
