As a Removals Coordinator you plan, schedule, and oversee residential and commercial moves on behalf of an Irish removals company, ensuring every job runs smoothly from initial enquiry to final delivery. You liaise closely with customers to understand their specific requirements, assess the volume and nature of goods to be moved, and translate that information into detailed operational plans covering crew allocation, vehicle selection, and routing. Day-to-day you manage bookings, prepare job sheets, arrange appropriate packing materials and equipment, and coordinate with drivers and removals crews to keep schedules on track. You also handle customer communication throughout the move, resolving any last-minute issues such as access difficulties, fragile items requiring special handling, or changes to timings. Depending on the company, you may coordinate international moves involving customs documentation and groupage shipments as well as straightforward local house moves.
Listen: a day as a Removals Coordinator
Your alarm goes off at 6:45 a.m. You need to be at the depot on the outskirts of Athlone by 7:30, before the crews clock in. You make a strong coffee, pull up your email on your phone during breakfast, and scan for anything urgent — a customer cancelling last minute, a driver flagging a problem with a van. By 7:30 you are at your desk running through the day's job sheets on the company's booking software. You check that this morning's three crews each have a printed sheet showing the collection address, the delivery address, any special items such as a piano or fragile antiques, and the agreed time window. One crew is doing a full house move from Mullingar to Cork, which needs two vans. You confirm with the lead driver that both are fuelled and have enough wrapping blankets and mattress covers.
Entry to this role typically requires a Leaving Certificate or equivalent, and Leaving Cert subjects such as Business, Geography, and Irish or a modern language are useful for the administrative and communication demands of the job. Many employers recruit at Leaving Certificate level and provide on-the-job training, while a QQI Level 5 certificate in Logistics, Transport and Distribution or Business Administration from a College of Further Education is a recognised alternative route. A QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Logistics or Supply Chain Management can strengthen your prospects and is available through a number of Education and Training Boards across Ireland. Some larger removals and relocation companies value a Level 7 or Level 8 degree in Business, Logistics, or Supply Chain Management for supervisory coordinator roles, though this is not a strict requirement at entry level. No statutory professional registration is required, but membership of bodies such as the Irish International Freight Association or the British Association of Removers (which operates in Ireland) is regarded favourably. Experience built through operative or driver's assistant roles within a removals firm is a common and practical entry route.
Most Removals Coordinators begin their careers in a junior administrative or operative role within a removals company, gaining practical knowledge of the business before moving into coordination. With experience, you can progress to Senior Coordinator or Operations Supervisor, taking responsibility for a larger team of drivers and crew across multiple daily jobs. Some coordinators specialise in corporate relocation or international moves, where knowledge of customs procedures and international freight adds significant value and earning potential. Further progression can lead to roles such as Operations Manager or Branch Manager, particularly in larger national companies or international moving groups with an Irish presence.
AI-powered route optimisation and scheduling tools are increasingly used by removals companies to improve fleet efficiency and reduce journey times, changing how coordinators plan their daily operations. Automated booking platforms and customer-facing chatbots are beginning to handle initial enquiries and straightforward scheduling, reducing some administrative workload. However, the human judgement required to assess complex moves, manage customer relationships, and resolve on-the-day problems means that the coordinator role is unlikely to be automated in the near future. Coordinators who embrace digital tools and develop data literacy will find their value to employers increases as the industry modernises.
