What does a Sterile Services Technician do?

As a Sterile Services Technician you are responsible for the decontamination, sterilisation, and repackaging of surgical instruments and medical devices used throughout a hospital or clinical setting. Working primarily in a Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), you dismantle, clean, inspect, reassemble, and package complex medical equipment using specialist autoclaves and washer-disinfectors. You follow strict infection control protocols and comply with relevant health and safety legislation to ensure that every item returned to clinical use is safe and fit for purpose. You work closely with theatre staff, surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, responding to requests from operating departments and wards. Attention to detail and precise record-keeping are central to the role, as full traceability of every instrument set is required.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Sterile Services Technician

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 6:00 a.m. You are due in the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) of a large regional hospital by 7:00 a.m. The department sits in the basement, away from wards and theatres, but it is the backbone of every surgical procedure carried out upstairs. You badge in, change into your departmental scrubs and PPE — gloves, mask, visor and apron — and check the handover notes from the night shift before the morning briefing begins at 7:15. By 7:30 you are in the decontamination zone, the 'dirty side', receiving used instrument trays returned from yesterday's evening theatre lists. Some sets are heavily soiled. You dismantle each instrument carefully, checking for damage, and load them into the washer-disinfector machines according to the validated cycle charts. Everything is tracked on the department's computerised traceability system — a scan of each tray, each machine cycle, each operator. No scan, no record; no record, no release.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.

Required Education

Entry into sterile services typically requires a Leaving Certificate or equivalent, with Biology and Chemistry at any level being particularly useful as background preparation. Most technicians in Ireland enter through on-the-job training combined with a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 award in Healthcare Support or Decontamination Services, often delivered through a College of Further Education or in-house hospital training programmes. Some hospitals provide structured induction and competency programmes aligned with national and HSE decontamination standards, which new staff complete during their probationary period. The HSE and individual hospital groups set internal competency requirements, and technicians are expected to keep up to date with standards issued by bodies such as the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA). While there is no single statutory professional register for this role in Ireland at present, adherence to national decontamination guidelines and ongoing training are essential requirements for practice.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most sterile services technicians begin in an entry-level technician role within a hospital CSSD, building competency under supervision before working more independently across all areas of the department. With experience, you can progress to a senior technician position, taking on additional responsibility for quality assurance, staff training, and equipment management. Further progression can lead to team leader or CSSD Supervisor roles, overseeing daily operations and ensuring compliance with decontamination standards. Some experienced practitioners undertake further qualifications in healthcare management or infection control, which can open doors to departmental management positions within the HSE or private hospital groups.

AI Impact on the job

AI and automation are beginning to influence sterile services through smart tracking systems, RFID-based instrument traceability, and automated washer-disinfector monitoring that can flag anomalies in real time. Robotic and automated decontamination systems are being introduced in some larger hospitals, which may reduce the volume of purely manual processing tasks over time. However, the hands-on inspection, reassembly, and quality-checking of complex surgical instruments continues to require skilled human judgement that AI cannot yet fully replicate. Overall, AI is likely to enhance the efficiency and auditability of CSSD work rather than replace the role of the technician in the near term.
