As a Dental Nurse you work alongside dentists and dental specialists to prepare treatment rooms, assist during clinical procedures, and ensure patients feel comfortable throughout their visit. You pass instruments to the dentist during treatments, monitor patients for signs of anxiety or distress, and help take and process dental impressions. Administrative duties such as maintaining patient records, booking appointments, and ordering supplies are also a regular part of the role. You work closely with dentists, dental hygienists, and receptionists in a range of settings including private practices, HSE dental clinics, and orthodontic or specialist centres.
Listen: a day as a Dental Nurse
You arrive at the private dental practice in Mullingar at eight o'clock, half an hour before the first patient is due. You pull on your tunic and PPE, then move through each of the two surgeries, checking that the dental chairs are clean, the suction lines are flushed, and the autoclave has completed its overnight sterilisation cycle. You load sterile instrument cassettes into the drawers beside each chair and restock the composite resin, bonding agent, cotton rolls, and disposable bibs that go through quickly on a busy day. The morning runs at a pace. You seat the first patient, a nine-year-old who is visibly nervous, and spend a couple of minutes talking him through what will happen before the dentist comes in. During the extraction you work the high-volume suction, pass instruments when the dentist calls for them by name, and keep an eye on the child's body language throughout. Afterwards you update his chart on the Exact software system and print aftercare instructions for his mother.

A QQI Level 5 Certificate in Dental Nursing or a Level 6 Advanced Certificate is the typical entry route, offered through PLC programmes in Colleges of Further Education and through dedicated programmes at institutions such as TCD and UCC. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, and English are particularly useful, though specific subject requirements vary by provider. On completing your qualification, you must register with the Dental Council of Ireland before you can practise legally as a Dental Nurse. Some practitioners begin as unregistered dental assistants and complete their qualification part-time while gaining on-the-job experience. Continuing professional development (CPD) is required to maintain Dental Council registration throughout your career.
Most Dental Nurses begin in a general dental practice after completing their QQI qualification and Dental Council registration, building confidence across routine and emergency procedures. With experience, you may specialise in areas such as orthodontics, oral surgery, or paediatric dentistry, often working in specialist practices or HSE clinics. Senior Dental Nurses can take on supervisory or practice management responsibilities, overseeing junior staff and coordinating clinical operations. Further study at Level 7 or 8 in dental therapy or oral health science can open additional clinical or leadership pathways.
AI-powered imaging tools are increasingly used in dental diagnostics to detect decay and bone changes, and Dental Nurses may be involved in preparing and uploading digital scans for AI-assisted analysis. Automated appointment scheduling and patient communication software is reducing some administrative duties, freeing more time for clinical support work. However, the hands-on, patient-facing aspects of the role — including chairside assistance and patient reassurance — cannot be replicated by AI, keeping the core of the profession secure. Dental Nurses who are comfortable with digital dental technologies will be better positioned as practices adopt more advanced systems.
