Studying Dental Hygiene at degree level gives you a thorough grounding in oral health science, periodontology, preventive dentistry, and patient communication. You will develop hands-on clinical skills in scaling, polishing, root planing, and oral health education from early in the programme. A significant portion of your timetable takes place in a supervised dental clinic, where you treat real patients under the guidance of qualified dentists and senior clinical staff. You also study radiography, pharmacology relevant to dental practice, and special-care dentistry for patients with complex needs. Community placements in HSE dental clinics and schools introduce you to public health dentistry. By graduation you are prepared for registration with the Dental Council of Ireland.

Entry is typically through the CAO, requiring a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects including English and a science subject such as Biology or Chemistry at Ordinary level or above. Higher Level Biology or Chemistry is strongly advantageous and some programmes specify minimum grades in these subjects. CAO points for Dental Hygiene programmes at TCD and UCC are competitive, generally reflecting high demand relative to limited places. QQI FET Level 5 qualifications in Science, Nursing, or Health Care can provide an alternative progression route for applicants without traditional Leaving Certificate grades. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly through the mature-student CAO route, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are available for eligible applicants from socioeconomic or disability backgrounds.
Demand for qualified dental hygienists in Ireland is strong, driven by growing public awareness of oral health, an expanding private dental sector, and HSE investment in community dental services. Graduates typically find employment relatively quickly after registration, with many securing positions before completing their final placements. The small annual output of graduates from Irish programmes means competition among employers rather than among job-seekers is the norm. Experienced hygienists can progress into practice management, clinical education, or further specialisation through postgraduate study.
Artificial intelligence is beginning to influence dental practice through AI-assisted radiograph analysis, which can flag early caries and periodontal bone loss with greater consistency than visual inspection alone. As a dental hygienist your core clinical work — scaling, root planing, patient education, and relationship-building — remains hands-on and cannot be automated. You will increasingly use digital patient records and AI-supported treatment-planning tools, so digital literacy is becoming a standard professional expectation. Overall, AI is likely to enhance the precision and efficiency of your work rather than threaten the role itself.

How to apply
Applications for undergraduate Dental Hygiene programmes in Ireland are made through the CAO (www.cao.ie) by 1 February each year; places are highly competitive and typically require strong Leaving Certificate results including Biology and/or Chemistry. Some programmes may also require an interview or supplementary assessment as part of the selection process.
