What will you learn?

This apprenticeship trains you to plan, set out, and install floor and wall tiles across residential and commercial settings. You will learn to read technical drawings, prepare surfaces, apply adhesives and grouts, and work with a wide range of materials including ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, and mosaic. Waterproofing systems for wet areas such as bathrooms and swimming pools form a key part of your training. Your week is split between on-the-job learning with a registered employer and off-the-job phases at an Education and Training Board (ETB) or Institute of Technology. By the end of the programme you will hold an NFQ Level 6 Advanced Certificate recognised across Ireland and the EU.

Required Education

Entry to this apprenticeship requires you to be at least 16 years of age and to have secured a contract with a registered SOLAS employer before registering. A Leaving Certificate or Junior Cycle qualification is typical, though there is no fixed minimum points requirement as entry is employer-led rather than CAO-based. Subjects such as Technical Graphics, Construction Studies, and Mathematics are useful preparation. Some employers may accept QQI Level 4 or Level 5 FET awards in lieu of formal school qualifications. Mature applicants are welcome, and SOLAS encourages applications from people returning to the workforce or changing careers. You can find registered employers and further information through apprenticeship.ie.

Career Prospects

The outlook for qualified tilers in Ireland is strong, driven by the ongoing national housing shortage and significant investment in commercial and public-sector construction. Experienced tilers who build a client base can move into self-employment relatively quickly, often earning considerably more than employees. Demand is particularly high in Dublin, Cork, and Galway, though opportunities exist nationwide. Holding an NFQ Level 6 Advanced Certificate also gives you portable credentials recognised across EU member states.

Impact of AI on this program

AI has limited direct impact on the hands-on craft skills at the core of tiling work, which requires precise physical judgement, surface reading, and manual dexterity that automated systems cannot yet replicate on site. However, digital tools powered by AI are increasingly used for project estimation, material waste calculation, and BIM-linked floor-plan setting out, so familiarity with these platforms is becoming an advantage. Augmented reality apps are beginning to help clients visualise tile layouts before installation, adding a new customer-facing dimension to the trade. Overall, AI is more likely to support your workflow than to replace your core skills.
