What does a Bathroom Fitter do?

Bathroom fitters design and install complete bathroom suites in domestic and commercial properties across Ireland, combining plumbing, tiling, and joinery skills to transform bathrooms from start to finish. On a typical day you take detailed measurements, interpret 2D and 3D plans, prepare the room by stripping out old fixtures, and fit new baths, showers, toilets, and wash-hand basins while connecting water, drainage, and sometimes electrical supplies. You check water pressure, select appropriate piping materials, and ensure all fittings meet Irish building regulations and health and safety standards. You work closely with homeowners, property developers, main contractors, and occasionally electricians or plasterers to co-ordinate the finishing of a bathroom project.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Bathroom Fitter

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 6.45 am. You load the van with the day's materials — a new concealed cistern, porcelain tiles, a thermostatic shower valve, and lengths of copper and push-fit plastic pipe — before driving to a semi-detached house in Portlaoise where you are three days into a full bathroom renovation. You arrive at 7.30 am and greet the homeowner, who has a question about the position of the new vanity unit. You pull out your marked-up 2D plan, talk it through calmly, and agree a small adjustment. Measuring twice before you cut anything is a habit you have drilled into yourself.

Required Education

Most bathroom fitters in Ireland enter the trade through a SOLAS plumbing apprenticeship, which runs over approximately four years and leads to an NFQ Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Craft. Helpful Leaving Certificate subjects include Construction Studies, Physics, and Mathematics, as these underpin pipework calculations, reading technical drawings, and understanding water systems. Some fitters begin with a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC course in Plumbing or Construction Skills at a College of Further Education before entering an apprenticeship. After completing the plumbing apprenticeship, many practitioners build tiling and bathroom design skills through short courses offered by SOLAS, ETBs, or tile-industry bodies. Registration with the Register of Contractors under the Construction Industry Register Ireland (CIRI) is increasingly important for credibility with domestic clients and for compliance with building regulations.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most bathroom fitters begin as apprentice plumbers with a plumbing and heating contractor, spending their apprenticeship rotating between college blocks and on-site work across Ireland. After qualifying at NFQ Level 6, many gain experience on a range of domestic and commercial projects before specialising in bathroom fitting, often adding tiling qualifications along the way. With several years of experience, many bathroom fitters move into self-employment or set up a small bathroom installation business, taking on their own clients and subcontracting additional trades as needed. Senior fitters may progress into estimating, project supervision, or bathroom showroom consultancy roles.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered design tools and augmented-reality apps are beginning to allow fitters and clients to visualise completed bathroom layouts before any work begins, improving planning accuracy and reducing costly mistakes. Estimating software that uses AI can speed up quoting and materials ordering, saving administrative time for self-employed fitters. However, the core hands-on skills of pipework installation, tiling, and fixture fitting require physical presence and fine craft judgement that AI cannot replicate on site. Overall, AI is likely to be a helpful productivity tool for bathroom fitters rather than a threat to employment in the trade.
